Joy may have more experience in announcing racing but he doesn't have more
racing experience than most other announcers. In fact my bet is that he's
never strapped in a race car of any type. It's embarrassing, not to
mention
irritating, to have to watch him be constantly corrected by DW and Larry
Mac.

Uh, actual he has strapped into a race car. Maybe you might want to get
some good information before you post. You won't look so ignorant that way.

Whatever you say numbnuts, I've probably forgotten more races than you've
ever
been to. But maybe anyone who doesn't agree with you is a troll.

I do not agree with anyone!

Nancy I looked up Mike Joy's picture and bio on SPEED and I don't even remember
seeing him before. Which series does he do?

He does pre-race and qualifying for Cup sometimes; he does booth for
Cup sometimes - I think he's mostly on during the Fox broadcasts, but I
could be wrong about that. He wasn't on nearly as much last season as
he had been before that. He also does the Barrett-Jackson auction
series on Speed TV, and I think he hosts the "Legends in Motorsports"
series. He is mostly associated with the Speed channel (which is owned
by Fox).

He covers racing for Speed/Fox (is the broadcaster during Fox's half of the
NASCAR season and shares the main booth with Darrell Waltrip and Larry
McReynolds), he also works the Speed coverage of the Barrett-Jackson
auctions (Scottsdale anyway, we'll see next month), and I've also seen him
hosting several episodes of "NASCAR Past Champions" which is also on Speed.
Most recently, I think he covered the year-end regional stock car races held
out in Irwindale California last month. When "Trackside" first got to going
on Speed, Mike was the "broadcaster" host of it, before they turned it over
to the guy that does it now (Steve Byrnes). Apparently, Steve was under more
of a blanket Speed contract, and was less expensive to use than Mike
would've been...and, his show at the time, "Totally NASCAR", was going away
anyway.

And I think his (Mike Joy's) bio pic is a tad old, as I think he has more
grey hair now...but don't we all.

And oh yeah, I'm not Nancy. lol Sorry.

Nope. Can't say I remember him at all. But it really doesn't matter if I heard
him or not. I like FOX/FX better than NBC/TNT. I wish the Busch and CTS were
going to be on FOX/FX because I am moving and the cable company where I am
moving to treats SPEED as a premium channel. I can't see paying the fee they
are asking so I can enjoy just one of the channels.
Currently SPEED is free.

Thanks for all that Info. Yes I may not recognize him from his picture if he
has a lot more gray hair.

But I replied to Nancy's message. Look up top. On 14 Dec Nancy1 wrote: then I

I think the new fans actually resent how much some of the announcers
know about racing, since they seem to pan worst on those who have been
around the longest and know the most.
There may be some of that.

OTOH, us experienced fans are justified in critiquing the
announcers, and in expecting improvement when they're not
doing the job as well as could be.

Consider Ken Squier - a man with a vast knowledge of NASCAR
racing, and beyond that a short track owner & race promoter.
But in the last years of his broadcast career, he was a
lousy broadcaster. Due to age, poor directors, or what,
I don't know; but he wasn't accurate in calling what happened
on screen, and you thus couldn't trust his call on what was
off screen. Knowledge wasn't helping there.

Mike Joy is much better than Webber (who scripts his spiel,
incredibly enough), but even his call is not of the quality
he had a few years back. Personally, I blame it on the
"three buds in a bar" style which Fox wants out of the crew,
not any failing in Mike's abilities.

Yes, but the experienced fans don't seem to be doing the critiquing. That
said, I tend to be more critical of local PA announcers at the tracks I
visit than I am of the broadcast ones. That is probably because I spend a
few years doing it, so when I hear a bad announcer, it really hurts.

I couldn't agree with you more. His Daytona telecasts were painful the last
few years. But he is instrumental in getting racing, particularly NASCAR,
on television. And he is one hell of a great promoter.

Yes, I don't care much for the style of broadcast that Fox produces, but I
never find Joy annoying.

Well, one of my nightmares is going to come true - Rusty is signed on
with ABC starting in '07, and will be doing the Chase. I must have
been awful naughty in a previous lifetime to have to suffer like
this....
