Oh, now this is priceless. I am going to call Alan next season for my
set-ups.

Yeah, from someone who doesn't even go to a local race track, let alone a
Cup event.

I don't mind the laid back approach to the booth callers for Fox. It's
better than pure broadcast calling and dull technical color commentary
IMO.

To my mind, there's a little too much bonhomie, and too little
race calling. I'd be happier if Mike did rather more talking,
and the other two quite a bit less. YMMV, of course.
Yeah, I agree with that. But we're the old guard. The new generation expects
such banter, based on the way other shows do similar things now to
apparently attract and retain, a younger audience. Apparently they want more
entertainment and less "play by play calling" during the race...

That's why I've never called out BP or Wally from the NBC team.
They may be goofy at times, but there are worse ways for them to carry
on. And their antics are a badly needed offset for Webber's often dry
and bland delivery of his canned facts and mind-numbing soliloquies.

Yes, I could certainly stand to see Webber replaced. Now I
know that he writes himself scripts in advance, I understand
why his commentary sounds so weird.
I'd like to see what would happen if someone yanked the power on his
teleprompter one day. ;-p Then who would look it up for us so we don't have
to? lol

I've become quite impressed with Dallenbach this year. His
comments on the race are substantive (unlike Benny's, which
have become increasingly trivial over the years), and his
joking around in the booth hasn't descended to playing the
fool, which is a line DW & Larry Mac have had a hard time
finding.
I've never panned too bad on Wally, he does an OK job in my book. Benny's
only trouble is how long it has been now since he's driven a car in
competition. It shows in his comments IMO. I'll take Benny over some of the
other possibles though...I'll tell you who I worry about getting going in
the booth unless he can find a better broadcast way, and that's Rusty
Wallace. I know he wants into TV so he can stay in the sport, but even his
stints on Trackside have been discouraging to me to this point. Something
about his manner or personality (or something) just doesn't rub me the right
way as a TV personality, even though I like him as a driver and all...

Bob Jenkins has also gotten elderly. It's painful to listen to him
on Speed News Sat & Sun.

That is unfortunate news, Jenkins was a good guy, and responsible
as much as anyone for the current standard of broadcasting.
I wonder if perhaps it might just be that his heart's not really
in the job, when it doesn't include race broadcasts.
I suppose the common denominator about 'Talking Heads' is that
each one of them reaches an age where there memory fades, they lose
the ability to read teleprompters
(altho i suspect the writers of the scripts can't write),
maybe modern technology has passed them by, and most assuredly
they have lost their first love/passion for the sport.
Nearing 60, i commiserate with these former good 'Talking Heads'.
We are always comparing Eras with Drivers, it seems the lead telecaster
falls into Eras also. Guess it's time for 50yr old Rusty Wallace
to usher in another new era, eh? Yuk!

I think every one of the Pit Reporters are very good.

Even Jeannie Z? But I agree with you, overall the current crop
of pit reporters are setting a very high standard. I could
wish they were a little more informative (instead of "made an
air pressure adjustment" or "added half a pound in the right
front", which is better, I'd like to hear "added half a pound
in the right front to loosen the car on entry", so we know
what the change was susposed to solve. Admittedly, it's hard
to fit all that in when 3 cars are all pitting in the same
12 second window.)
John
Zelasko should stay with MLBaseball! NBC does the 'Thru The Field'
too much imho, and by doing so, stifles the Pit Reporters on giving
meaningful reports. But McCoy u gotta admit u r more into the
technical aspect as opposed to probably the majority of fans
who like 'The Fluff'. Krista Voda was pretty good in her very brief
stint as a Pit Reporter.

I'm hoping that ABC/ESPN might visit Lake RASN to get some feel
for who they should employ in front of their cameras in '07.

Don't hold your breath. I wouldn't be surprised if ABC has the worst crew of
all, Dr. Jerry Punch excepted.

Well, we know that Rusty will be there. There's a current survey on
FoxSports now, asking which channel would the viewer prefer Rusty to be
on? No choice, for "none."

But does adding half a pound to the right front always loosen up every
car on entry or would a different chassis with a different setup
respond differently to this adjustment?
It depends - that's why when the pit reporter says "they added
half a pound in the right front" it's not that helpful. I'd
like them to also say why - what problem is the car experiencing,
that they expect the half pound to fix.

As it is, if all they tell us is a half pound, then we know
the car's not right, and we know it's not far off (half a
pound is pretty much fine tuning). So that's something, but
they could tell us more.

BTW, you should probably take Alan's comments with a grain
of salt.

Um, Alan, air pressure changes _are_ spring adjustments.

You can't do much with the shocks 'during a race' but you can use
spring rubbers. Air pressure changes might slightly change the
behavior of the shocks & springs during a race, but the two areas
are not absolutely interchangeable. If you miss it with the S&S, all
the pressure changes in the world won't fix it.

Also, my reply was mean to address the car setup as a direct or
straightforward application or science. I was not referring to only
the limited changes one can do on race day.

Have you seen Rusty as a commentator for Busch races?

Not too bad. Pretty good, actually. None of the "I, me, I, me, I, me" stuff
that everyone seems to be worried about.

Waaaay better than DW, IMO.
