How Wally turned his limited stock car experience and winless record
into a prime broadcasting gig is beyond me.
Compared to Bobble-Head Mike Joy; the man is a legend. What did Mike race,
Hot Wheels?

It's more a test of the gear than the driver.
Then maybe the drivers that want a D500 trophy should get better gear. How
come it took Big E so long to get that - was his gear not good enough? Or
Tony - 2 championships and his gear still isn't good enough? I dunno
dood - I think it is the big daddy of wins. NA$Cball believes that, the
drivers believe that, the fans believe that, and the sponsors believe
that. IMHO, you win the D500 and you are a good driver. I don't care
if you sucked in every other race. It's no different than baseball - you
can be a mediocre organization destined for continued obscurity; but you
win the World Series once and on that day you still get to be the greatest.
Like the 97 Marlins. Hey, or the 1968 Jets. What did Namath *EVER* do
at any other time in his career? And he got to the HOF based on that one
game, a game where he threw for under 200 yards and had no TDs.

No. There is some luck involved too. I don't buy into that winning Daytona
makes you the best driver concept, at least not with restrict or plates.
Sterling has won it more than Tony, does that make him a better driver too?

I don't think you give Mike enough credit. I'd almost bet he has raced more
than you. (discounting hot-wheels laps of course)

No, but it makes him a good driver. If anyone said "Manslaughter Marlin"
was not a good driver, I would immediately point them to the D500 in 1994
and 1995. I am not saying a one time winner is a fluke either mind you;
but Mikey also won it twice; in 01 and 03. As such, he gets the label of
"Good driver". They both do.

Dood - the only racing he ever did was SCCA. But yes, he has probably
raced more than I have. Maybe, but maybe not. I have done my share of
self funded driving in inexpensive classes over the years. That having been
said, I do not think a self funded SCCA car uniquely qualifies a person to
be a NA$CBall announcer. And although listening to him is fine; I prefer
someone who can keep their fucking head steady for the 20 or so seconds at a
time that the camera is pointed their way; and quite frankly Steve, I
really would prefer to see people that were successful NA$Cball drivers
doing these events. DW is already out there, as is BP. There has to be
some other retired drivers willing to blow their weekends in front of a
camera. OK, you can stop laughing. Maybe one or two of the retired
drivers are not worth $50M.

LOL, that's your whole problem with him! He's been around
racing since you and I were shitting green in our diapers,
and you are over-stating the bobble head affect...it ain't
near as bad as you make it out to be.

You admitted he's ok to listen to so just turn your head to
the right and stare at boogity!

Spot labor. Cope should park his rattle-trap. Somehow Wally is growing on
me in the booth, as long as he doesn't scream boogity.
I've liked Wally in the booth since he started.

One more thought.......When you get to drive a Nextel cup car on a
regular basis you have to be a good driver - you don't just get a pass
to drive in the series. It is an accomplishment just to get into the
series.........think about all of the drivers throughout the country
that would love to just have a shot at being in the series

Now Mike, you can't say they are not excellent drivers.... may not be on
par
with those they were driving against, but put them up against your average
"talented" driver and watch them shine... Prime example is Kenny
Schrader....doesn't shine amongst the Cup guys but goes around the country
whipping the shit out of the best of the rest....

Oh, I agree, but I guess I should qualify my original comment about Waltrip
as "compared to his peers".
