I landed at the Corpus Christi Airport this afternoon. The flight out of
Houston was delayed on the ground for an hour or so because of weather.
As I was walking out of the jet way, leaning over the ticket counter and
looking very pissed off was someone who looked VERY familiar. At first I
thought it was someone I worked with, but I realized that it was either
Terry Labonte, or his doppelganger. I just wonder why he was flying commercial.

My wife and I took a trip to Alaska back in 97. We left the Sunday after
the August Bristol race and had to fly through Atlanta then on to Salt Lake
City then Anchorage. We were traveling first class so we were able to
watched all the other folks come onboard. My wife sees Richard Petty with
his wife come on board and walk to the coach section with two other couples.
They got off our flight in Salt Lake to wait for a connection and we changed
equipment also so we walked around the terminal some. Went up to him and
asked where he was headed. He said Jackson Hole, I think he has a cabin
there. This was a good ole fashion commercial flight.

Good UCAP 'Gordon'. U shoulda asked the King if he was going to visit
The King of Lawyers Gerry Spence, hometown Jackson Hole Wyo.

Less than satisfactory was Carey Akin's UCAP.
U said nothing to Terry Labonte?
C'mon Carey, have u become so jaded u won't converse with
yet another NA$CAr Star?

Actually, my wife went back and got his autograph on the flight to SL on a
legal pad I had in my briefcase. we gave it to her godson, he's a big Petty
fan to this day.

The guy had his traditional hat on, wasn't anything less that polite and
didn't mind my question. Sort of looked out as if to see the lake he was
going fishing on when he answered my question where he was headed...

Well as a former pilot I have a good guess. If he still owns an airplane,
they do break. A broken airplane could not care less if it is John Q
Smith or Terry Labonte in the back. Not common but not rare to have to
make a quick trip to get a commercial flight because something needed for
that flight won't work and can't be fixed without a part that you can not
get that day. Goes with the territory.
I don't know that Terry is a pilot, but most of the teams have access to or
own their own aircraft. I guess I was surprised that he was in the terminal
and not the FBO. It has nothing to do with him being or not being a pilot.

I was on a Southwest flight some years ago, and Nolan Ryan got on late. Got
stuck in a middle seat.

Sorry, Cru. I was in a hurry. Had to get my rental and get down to the
shipyard. I was running late. Besides, Terry was at the head of a long
line, and he was hunched over the counter that the gate attendant uses.
And, to be honest, he really didn't look like he was ready for some
conversation at that point. Had I been traveling for leisure, it would have
been a different story.
