Default Was That Who I Thougth It Was? - 03-09-2006 , 05:34 PM

I landed at the Corpus Christi Airport this afternoon. The flight out of
Houston was delayed on the ground for an hour or so because of weather. As
I was walking out of the jet way, leaning over the ticket counter and
looking very pissed off was someone who looked VERY familiar. At first I
thought it was someone I worked with, but I realized that it was either
Terry Labonte, or his doppelganger. I just wonder why he was flying
commercial.

I think Terry is one of the nicest guys in NASCAR, and from what it seems-I
think he still may try to be a normal person, even though he's loaded.....He
just reminds me of the type.

Indeed. He's in the seat of a high profile (albeit new) team for a few more
races, I would've thought that team-provided air travel would be at his
disposal during his 5-6 race tenure with HOF Racing. Hmmm.

He certainly does come across as one of the nicer guys, but it is tough to
tell if it is his PR folks at work or not. Since I haven't met him, I
couldn't tell you. Kind of like Tony Stewart. His persona on TV is less
than favorable, but in person he is very much down to earth and one of "the
guys". Go figure.

I've met him. He is one of the nicest guys on the circuit I've met. The
King was mighty accomodating as well, as were Brett Bodine, Harry Gant,
Jeff Hammond, Bill Elliott, John Andretti, Jeff Gordon, and Morgan Shepherd.

Rusty Wallace...mmmmm... no.

I hate to say it-but Rusty think's he's God's gift to NASCAR.

I met on a couple of different occasions in M'ville, VA. I wanted to get a
picture with him on one occasion, and he wouldn't dare set his "Miller"
down, even to do a photo op. You can see all of Rusty in the photo I had
made with him, with the exception of his right hand...which is holding the
beer.

And get this-The first time I saw Rusty in M'ville-I had him autograph a
magazine and a trading card, and got the full Rusty Wallace autograph. After
that initial meeting-I saw him throughout the mid-90's, and he "Signed"
several more items for me, but got these versions of his autograph
"RYWall___".

Dave Mader even made a comment about how poor his autograph was, on my '93
Winston poster!

I watched him turn away an 8 year old kid at Pocono. Completely blew him
off with "ask me after the race". (they didn't allow the public back
there after the race) The people I was with didn't even bother
approaching him.
This was the first race after Davey Allison died, so we would have
understood if he blew off the adults, but that kid was crushed. He was
decked out in Rusty Wallace crap.

That same weekend, we were on pit road Sunday morning while the teams
were setting up their boxes. We were talking with Buddy Parrott when
Rusty came running out of the garage area to a van waiting to rush him
off somewhere. Everybody around yelled for him and he didn't even so
much as wave. He just hopped into the van, slammed the door and left.
Everyone was a little miffed. Even Buddy let out a "hrmph".

Since then, every DNF he logs brings a little smile to my face.

To me, Rusty always comes across as an ass. But, having never met the man,
I reserve judgment.

I clearly remember that Rusty Wallace killed Adam Petty. He was seen
cutting brake lines in the garage, and later was asked about it. He
kicked the dog that walked by, and then grinned. He said something about
the view of Kennedy's head from the grassy knoll; and then said he was
working on a chocolate bar that inserts cancer into 6 year olds. It was at
that point that I pulled away my hand and decided not to shake his. When he
blinked, I noticed swastika's tatooed to his eyelids. He is a bad, bad man.
Someone has to stop him before he hurts more people.

My wife and I took a trip to Alaska back in 97. We left the Sunday after
the August Bristol race and had to fly through Atlanta then on to Salt Lake
City then Anchorage. We were traveling first class so we were able to
watched all the other folks come onboard. My wife sees Richard Petty with
his wife come on board and walk to the coach section with two other couples.
They got off our flight in Salt Lake to wait for a connection and we changed
equipment also so we walked around the terminal some. Went up to him and
asked where he was headed. He said Jackson Hole, I think he has a cabin
there. This was a good ole fashion commercial flight.
