I have a couple ideas as to why Mark Martin has never won a championship. He will go down as the best driver in Nascar history never to have won a championship, IMHO. But there are a few reasons why that may be true. Firstly, the guy is just not an aggressive driver. How many times can you remember where he bumped someone for a win? Or got into any scrapes for aggressive driving? Guys like Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon and Dale Sr. won championships because they were willing to take some risks if need be. They weren't afraid to use the bumper if the need arose. So in that respect Mark is just not aggressive enough. Also, Mark has never been a dominant driver at restrictor plate tracks, which are four races each year. He constantly complains about them and never has done very well, unlike Gordon and Earnhardt. I would love to know his average finish at Daytona and Talledega compared to other past champions. Basically, he throws away four races every year. Roush has never been known for its restrictor plate program, which has hurt Mark over the years. I just don't think you can win a championship by tossing 4 races out the window. Mark has always done well at intermediate tracks and road races, but when it comes to restrictor plates he just isn't guaranteed there. |

Who won an all green flag 500 mile race at Talladega in 1997 or 8? "Will" <willt65 (AT) comcast (DOT) net> wrote in message news:iuGdnYUsmYLYtmbenZ2dnUVZ_vmdnZ2d (AT) comcast (DOT) com... Chevy is their pet, and always has been. I mean, you don't see Ford advertising how many titles they've won out of so many years during the Daytona 500 broadcast, do ya? ;-) |

Congrats on being a fan for at least 5 years. But that's not what I said, or meant. Please do try to keep up. |

Will you also may not remember that the move over tactic was considered dirty driving till fairly recently and would get you a listen to the old country song. "Hello wall." They all knew it and if you wanted to not be put in the fence, you didn't do anything that put someone in the fence. It was their version of professional ethics and it worked. Yes there was bumping and bangin on short tracks, and yes they raced side by side, and yes those men were a tough bunch. They wouldn't throw temper tantrums on the TV, you were lucky if they came at you with just a tire tool. Now you also might not remember MM was one of the early people to suffer a points penalty when his car was found with a post race problem. Fines were the norm back then. If memory is correct they also took 25 points away and he lost the title by less than 25 as it worked out.
