In Labonte's case, I suspect that the penalty will be appealed on the
grounds that their violation was not intentional and Nascar will give
TL his 25 points back.

TLab couldn't care less about the points. It's the owner points that
matter for
the 96.

Which will be hugely important when Tony Raines steps in after T-Lab's first
5 or 6 races I think it is. They *need* to be in the top 35 by then, and 25
points could be the difference that early in the season.

Good point! BTW, I thought I heard that the illegal carb was found
twice. I think it was found before and after their qualifying effort.
I could be wrong.

I HATE that. Take off a part. Put it on the bench next to the new one. Turn to
take a swig of Coke. Turn back and pick up the original part and put it back on.

Just read that 25 points were taken from Terry and the new Hall
of Fame
racing team for an illegal carb used in qualifying. (Joe Gibbs,
who is
supplying the engines, has taken full blame for the mix up).
This seems like a legitimate mistake but I still think the fine
is needed.
My question is why no points were taken off the 48 for a
blatant attempt at
cheating.

Because it's owned by the master crook himself rick hendrick

I seem to remember that Rick Hendrick was up on Federal charges in the
1990s for money laundering. I also seem to remember that the same Rick
Hendrick contracted leukemia about that time.

What happened to the money laundering charges, and why is Rick cured
miraculously of leukemia?

Cheating is cheating. The only difference is the size of the checkbook
BUYING the points.

cheating.

NASCAR explained it by saying that the parts that Knaus used to make
JJ's car illegal, were not illegal parts in and of themselves. Each
component of the setup was legal; it was the effect of the way he
combined them that made it illegal. OTOH, Labonte's carbeurator was in
and of itself illegal (the part wasn't legal).

An on-the-line difference, to me, but I'm not NASCAR.

(And, BTW, that "felon" stuff about Hendrick is so old it's grey - give
it up.)
