Then why do the states they retire to (FL, for example) have lower

one would expect FL to have a higher rate than AR LA MS OK, because FL

OK all have higher rates than FL.

They wreck trying to get here!

Enjoy the humor in southern driving while you can. In 20 years of
driving prior to moving to the south, I had NEVER been in a collison of
any kind, even minor. Since I have lived in the south, my wife and I
have been smashed into so many times I can barely count them. The last
time it happened I suffered a slipped disk, which causes me constant
discomfort. Anytime I think about laughing about some southern
tailgater, the disk reminds me that it is not funny. If CA drivers are
really so bad, how come CA has a fatality rate of 11.47 and AL has
22.27? The SAFEST southern state in which to drive (TX at 17.46) is
dramatically more dangerous to drive in than CA. Could it be that the
"psycho" driving maneuvers that you refer to in CA are actually more
controlled, skilled, and NASCAR-like than the way southerners drive?

What, you wanted a serious answer?

OK, the real reason is probably money. The states you list are
notable for being near (or at, in the case of LA) the bottom
of the list for tax revenues and gov't spending. The roads
are often narrow and not well maintained, not well signed,
not well lit, and don't have the latest ideas in safety barriers.

Similarly, those states have low median incomes, and thus a
higher proportion of old, poorly maintained vehicles which
their owners can't afford to replace or repair.

Florida is considerably wealthier than any of the other
southern states (and incidently, OK is not a southern state).

John

You are missing the point. EVERY southern state has a traffic fatality
rate that is way above the national average. Various southerners have
come up with various excuses, but none of the excuses, individually or
collectively, account for the fact that it is EVERY SOUTHERN STATE.
Not all southern states are as poor as LA AR MS. Not all southern
states have had huge influxes of people from the north. You
southerners just have such huge ego problems that you just dont want to
admit that you drive like maniacs and you have more wrecks.

Well, I figured from word go that your stats were bogus, but
having a few minutes to spare, I took a peek at the NHTSA site.
As expected, the numbers don't support you. The worst state
for fatalities is that sub-tropical paradise Wyoming. Other
bad states are Montana, New Mexico, and that hotbed of
seccessionism Alaska.

From that, I'd draw the conclusion that states with a lot
of rural territory have high fatality rates, probably because
it can take a long time before an accident is seen, and the
injured transported to hospital. (that idea is supported
by the fact that FL & TX have similar (but lower) rates to
AZ or CO, states with a similar mix of dense urban areas
and remote less populated areas).

It's probably also worth noting that when you look at trends,
fatality rates in the south are uniformly stable or decreasing,
while every northeastern state is increasing, in most cases
at double-digit rates (+21% in VT!).

No. You are, idiot. Leave Atlanta. We don't want you here. Move to
Maine and boil some lobsters.

Congratulations for actually looking at data! I said "Why is the
traffic fatality rate so high in the south compared to the other
REGIONS of the country, but I did not say that the worst STATE was in
the south. I was comparing REGIONS of the country, and using state
data to do it. There was nothing bogus or erroneous in what I said.
You said TX and FL have lower rates than CO. That is not true. TX
17.46, FL 18.36. CO 16.66. Below is a list of the 50 states sorted
from high to low on their traffic fatality rates:
WY
MS
SC
MT
NM
AR
SD
AL
TN
LA
WV
KY
AZ
ID
OK
MO
GA
NC
FL
KS
TX
DE
CO
ND
IA
VT
ME
IN
NV
NE
WI
OR
AK
ME
VA
UT
PA
MD
OH
CA
HI
MN
IL
NH
WA
CT
NJ
NY
RI
MA

As you can see, all 11 of the southern states appear in the top 21,
which makes the south the most dangerous REGION in which to drive. The
most common excuse I have heard is "yankees coming down here causing
wrecks" That excuse is totally invalid. For one thing, the
northeastern yankee states have the lowest fatality rates as a region.
In fact, MA RI NY NY CT are the lowest five states. And for another
thing, many western states, such as NV CO CA, have had lot more growth
due to yankees moving in that most southern states and their fatality
rates are ALL LOWER THAN ANY SOUTHERN STATE. I do mean to congratulate
you though, for being the most open minded southerner to ever respond
to my posts on this subject either here or elsewhere. Let's continue
with this if you dare.

ps Since CO has had so many more yankees moving in than most southern
states, its major city is way up in the mountains a mile high, and
there are so many mountainous icy roads to deal with, I think it is
incredible that it is safer to drive in than ANY SOUTHERN STATE!

That is pretty intelligent. Let me ask you a question. There are many
people that hate the NRA. Are those people gunless?

Why are you posting from Atlanta if you hate the South. Get out of here.
We don't want you. Go. Loser.
