Good stuff, Dan...thanks. You guys in the mid-west had a lotta that kind of
action nearby. Spent over 30 years on the Left Coast, so a different deal there.
We had Herschel, tho!!
I have to tell ya, Tom; I, too grew up on the left coast, and was

very much involved in racing there before I left. Besides Herschel
(what a treat it was to watch him race back then, and then to see him
place third at TWS, beating Earnhardt in '93), I also was priveledged
to watch a young Ernie Irvan, stock car legends Ivan Baldwin, Sonny
Easley, Jim Thirkettle, Danny and Don Simkins, and others that I have
forgotten off the top of my head. Open wheel stars like Gary
Patterson, Chuck Gurney (I had some fun earlier this year bugging him
about getting old and gray-so have I), Howard Kaeding, Johnny Brazil,
Jan Opperman (I probably should have put him first), Jimmy Boyd, Terry
Crousure, Roger Rager-and many others. And my list is certainly
northern California biased. This isn't to say that the left coast is
the hot bed that the midwest was and is; but there sure was some great
racing and great drivers out there in the 70's. Heck, most of the
young kids getting the good rides in Indiana these days are coming out
of California. Drivers like Josh Wise, Damion Gardner, Brad Sweet-or
even Chad Boat, although he is out of Arizona. Cory Kruseman out of
Ventura is one other strong shoe.
No matter where you are in this country, there is a local track out
there. No matter who is racing, I strongly encourage anyone with an
interest in racing to get out there and see what is going on. It may
change your life. It certainly has changed mine over 30 years ago,
and for the better, I might add.
