Daytona disappointed about Hall decision
By Dave Rodman, NASCAR.COM
March 7, 2006

Mirabal said the Daytona Beach delegation was informed
of NASCAR's decision in phone calls at 9:15 Monday morning,
***and that NASCAR confirmed it had no intention
of removing itself from the town.
"This was a unique opportunity," Mirabal said. "But what
we heard today in two conversations was their commitment
that the NASCAR headquarters was not going to move to
Charlotte -- it was never intended to move nor will it move.

"The second thing is they are planning to build the
$70 million Speedplex across the street from where the
Hall of Fame was going to be and that in itself is going to
have a large economic impact on our community."

International Speedway Corporation spokesman David
Talley said the Speedplex proposal was still being considered.

Mirabal said the fact that Charlotte's capital was
"92 to 95 percent public money" probably weighed the scale
in that city's favor, adding that Atlanta's proposal was
"100 percent public money, while ours had zero public funds."
***"We followed what Bill France and International Speedway
Corporation did throughout their existence -- we did it
the old fashioned way, going out and getting the money
on our own with no government subsidies -- and we
thought we were following the way NASCAR and [ISC] had
built their successful corporate structure," Mirabal said.

***Mirabal said he felt sustainability would be Charlotte's
biggest challenge, as it would have been for any of the cities.
"We have 53 million visitors in our area, and Charlotte
has 3 [million] and Atlanta has between 8 and 9 million.
We felt this was a tourist attraction; therefore you had
to be in a place that attracts tourists."

CRU: As a taxpayer of The College Football Hall Of Fame in South Bend IN
and location of Notre Dame-arguably the #1 college football program in history,
I can't help but heed Mirabal's words--Sustainability!
Declining attendance & more Taxpayer support is the history.
Altho The National Football Foundation never moved to South Bend,
as a long-time observer of NA$CAr, it would not surprize me if they moved
Headquarters to Charlotte.

I said it here somwhere yisterdee Cru. Brian France, according to published
reports, has purchased a home "near Charlotte". And yes, NASCAR HQ is in
Daytona, but IMO its heart and soul are in the mid-Atlantic, from VA to SC
(the Charlotte "metro" has bedroom communites in Northern SC just South of
Charlotte), centrally clumped right around Charlotte. It was just a
half-assed comment when I made it to my wife a while back, but I told her I
thought NASCAR HQ would be located "near" Charlotte, just like their R&D
division, within the next decade. Another quasi-clear thinker like myself
making the statement tells me it definitely wasn't a case of too much beer
this time... ;-) May not happen, honestly, but there are certainly enough
signs that say it may happen to satisfy kook conspiracy therorists such as
myself...

First, a case of beer is *not* too much.

Second, as has happened here in several recent (past 10-15 years) where a local
company builds their *new* plant in the Carolinas, but "has no intention of
moving existing business units from PA" then 3-5 years later one unit then
another and another moves to the new, more efficient and modern facility "so
they can be competitive" but the "corporate HQ and offices are remaining here in
PA, right where we started" only to finally shut 'er down and pull out (what
sense does it make to have HQ here and everyone else somewhere else?).

Third, a case of beer is NOT too much!

LOL! It is for me, unless of course, that case lasts for a month or two...I
just can't handle the sauce now like I could as a 20-something. A hard night
of drinking for me today is not 1, but 2 whole Baileys on the rocks with
dinner...pathetic, I know. At least I'm honest about it... :-)

Oh yeah. Hear it all the time. "We're building a new place somewhere, and
cutting back a little here, but we are staying here." What they don't say is
that sure, they're staying, but only for a finite time frame...We had HUGE
issues with this when NAFTA first passed, as what wasn't tobacco here WAS
textiles, and ALL the textile mills are now South of the border. So what do
tobacco warehouses and old vacant textile mills do for income? Become VERY
large indoor storage unit buildings. For boats and RVs. Put there by people
who live in subdivisions so snooty, you can't have a boat or RV visible in
your yard, any part of your yard...what a crazy world we live in.

I'm sorry Cru, but Notre Dame is 2nd behind the Michigan Wolverines.
In fact it was Fielding Yost that showed Notre Dame how to play
football.

That all will change VERY soon ;-)

Rank/Team/%/Won/Lost/Tied/Played
1 Michigan 0.74421 849 280 36 1165
2 Notre Dame 0.74352 811 266 42 1119

ND only needs one more win than UM to overtake win %. No argument
they're both historically the best in the sport.
