Default Very Bad Gas Mileage - 12-11-2004 , 01:58 PM

My 1996 Nissan Altima gets very poor gas mileage, Why? What can I do to get
better mileage?

1) Don't drive it like you stole it.
2) Check tire pressures once a week or so and
keep them inflated to the recommended pressure.
Maintenance.
3) Change air/oil/fuel filters regularly.
4) Check the spark plugs to make sure they
are clean and gapped properly. Change them out for
good ones when they show signs of wear.
5) Make sure that the oil levels are good, and, you change the
oil on a regular basis.
6) Have the alignment on the vehicle checked and adjusted
on a regular basis (Especially if you see odd wear patterns on
the tires).
7) Keep the car clean. I.E. DOn't load it up with stuff.
It takes gas to accelerate mass, and, the more mass in the car, the
more gas it takes to get it going and keep it going.

if u load these particular models up with stuff, it doesn't really kill
their gas mileage. but dave mundt, you are right for a small car witha
small 4 cyl, like a honda civic. that would start to get worse gas
mileage with a lot of weight.

anyhow, lets start with this: how long do u let the engine stay on , after
a cold start, without driving? for these cars, 5-15 seconds is quite
enough, you must start driving after that. otherwise, you will waste an
exorbandent amount of fuel. trust me. you will see the proof after you
try idling less after a cold state. these cars in particular EAT fuel
like pigs when cold.
