Default A/C compressor cclutch removal - 08-09-2003 , 04:50 PM

What all is involved and what tooling (special) is needed to pull and
replace a clutch on a AC compressor. Vehicle is 1990 240SX.

I have a Chiltons manual, but have yet to find a proceedure for
removal in this manual or a reference to the freon type. Is it R-12
or R-134a.

I believe the problems in my sons AC is a bad clutch as its noisy and
binds, when turned by hand. Previous owner actually cut the belt off
the car so it would quit making noise. System still seems to have
freon and has pressure, so could the clutch be removed from the
vehicle while its still hooked to the refrigerant lines or does it
have to come out. I figure this would be a cheaper way to possibly fix
his AC, and if the compressor did turn out to be bad, I could always
munt the new clutch on a compressor that I can get without a clutch
on it already. Looking for the cheapest way to try, and without a
compresssor can't do much troubleshooting, and no sense in buyng a
compressor when its just a bad clutch.....considering what each of
them cost.

Still looking for a belt to slip on it just to see what it does do
under power. No one other than NIssan dealer has it in stock, and I
refused to fork over $38.00 for a belt..Advance Auto is backordered,
so its a waiting game for a belt.
