Default Does anyone know how the brake light circuit on a 1986 Stanza works? - 03-24-2005 , 11:17 AM

Hi,

I have a 1986 Stanza that has brake lights that are always on. When the
brake pedal is NOT pressed, it presses a switch and the switch is closed.
So, when the brake pedal is NOT pressed, the switch is closed and the lights
should be off. I've disconnected the switch to try and test it. Given that
the switch is normally closed and the lights should be off, I would expect
the lights to be on when the switch is open. The lights are on no matter
what, even if I close the two wires manually with a wire. Given that
NC=Lights Off and NO=Lights On, there must be another electrical device
switching the lights on or off. A relay or something, does anyone have the
repair manual for this? Does anyone know where I will find this?

Thanks,

Alan

I don't have a 86 Sentra, but in all the vehicles I have ever owned, the
brake switch was always off until the brake pedal was depressed which
pushed the button in and lit the brake lights. Are you sure the button
is not stuck in?

Yes, you are right. I didn't see that there are two switches on the brake
pedal, one for the cruise (which was the one I was looking at) and one for
the stop lights. I was troubleshooting the wrong switch. Who would think
that both of the rubber contact stoppers for each switch would dryup and
crack to pieces at the same time!

Thanks for the help!

Well, it's a good thing that you found that extra switch, because I
didn't know that the cruise control had a separate cutoff switch on the
brake pedal (I don't have CC on my 97 PU). It would seem to me that the
one brake light switch could serve to light the brake lights and shut
off the cruise control, if set.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised when I finally found it, but everything sure
made more sense when I did. I agree that it seems a little crazy to have
two switches when one could do it. I guess I should have tried to put the
little pieces of dried of plug back together and I would have discovered
there was two of them instead of just one...

Thanks,

Cheap fix is to tape a penny over the hole. If it doesn't go off, just
keep stacking on pennies until it does.
