turn signal works good. same combination switch also turns on the
lights. there's the problem. turning the knob on the end of the stick,
to get the lights on and it all goes wrong. tach goes nuts, fuel and
temp guages peg, high beam and 4 way dash lights come on. turning on the
lights is sending power to all the wrong places. only wiring diagram I
can find is in a Chilton book at the library--- it's worthless for me,
doesn't even show some of the wire colors thats on my truck.

I've never worked on an xcab, but it sounds like a ground problem and have
seen similar weird problems on other cars.
A large body part is not making good ground contact. The current that would
normally go through this part, now finds a way through another part. This
other part normally only carries current to other components. More current
through one path also means a higher voltage drops across that path, so it
could cause significant drops in supply voltage to some components. Remember
Ohms law, E=IR, from highschool? The (R)esistance does not change but the
current(I) has increased so the voltage drop(E) increases.

Try this: get a booster cable. Tie the black lead to battery. Do not use the
positive - just let that dangle. Using the other side of this booster cable
(the black part), make connections to components you know should be grounded
(frames, etc) and try turning your lights on to see if it makes any
difference. When you find a point where it makes a difference, you've got a
clue what panel is missing ground.
