I don't think struts and springs are the problem.

Jack the car up. Do the springs rattle when you shake them up and down?
No? It's NOT springs.

Struts? I can only see them making a noise if something is obviously loose, like
the bolts at the top.

Torque every bolt in the front end to factory spec. That means loosen it a bit,
and then torque it with a torque wrench (I'd really like to have a wrench that's
a torque wrench when tightening, and a normal wrench when loosening.)

Find a place you can reproduce the problem. Have a buddy with good ears
(no rock band fanatics) stand outside the car as you go by. Make sure it's
coming from where you think it is. Have them stand on both sides of the
car as you go by.

Don't throw parts, labor, and money at the problem, find the problem.

No: it's not springs.

I bought an 02 Sentra a few days ago. When I go over a slight bump or
crack in the road (only at low speed) the right front wheel knocks
very hard. I had the stabilizer links replaced, they had a little play
in them, but the knock is still there. Any ideas ?

Thanks. Leo

Do you get any knocking sound if you rock the right front corner of
the car up and down? If it's that noticeable, you might be able to
reproduce it while stopped. You might examine the condition of the
upper strut mounts. Good luck. Al

No, everything is tight. I replaced the front engine mount, it was
worn. I'm going to go for new struts and springs.

I've had 2 mechanics go over the entire front end, removed, inspected
and replaced (with same assembly) the right side strut assembly, but
can't isolate the problem. The suspension is 6 years old, and I'm only
paying cost for the parts, no labour charge. Less than $200.00 for
everything. It can't hurt. I trust it will fix the problem.

Thanks. Leo
PS: Checked the bearings, all the linkage. Everything is snug. It only
happens at very low speeds. I can run over a cow at 60 mph and not
feel it.

Thanks. Leo

Couple of things.

Loose wheel or incorrectly installed wheel. Clean hub and torque the wheel
nuts.

Outer CV shaft joint is moving in joint because the clip has come loose or
missing.

Disk Brake pads moving inside the calliper.
Had that problem with a Ford Focus. The aftermarket pads backing plate was
too large and when I went over a bump or accelerated/slowed I would get a
knock. I was sure it was a drive shaft but after grinding a little off of
the backing plates of the front pads the knock was gone.

Tomorrow I'm taking it into the shop again, we'll start with new
struts and check every nut and bolt within the suspension system
again. I checked the brakes last Sat., they were fine. I'll let you
all know.

Thanks everyone. Leo

The struts were finished, especially the right side. New one's made a
big difference. There's still a slight knock which are likely the sway
bushings. I'm changing them this Fri. Hope that's it.

Be well.

Leo

OK. Here's the score so far; changed the stabilizer links, put in new
struts and new sway bar bushings. The ride is about 85%, still has a
slight thump at low speeds. Maybe it's normal for a 6 year old Sentra.
I'm used to a Nissan pick-up which I've driven for the past 14 years,
rode as smooth as silk, but then it's a ladder frame, everything is
isolated from the body.

Could be I'm not used to uni-bodies.

Thanks again everyone. Leo
