Default Fuel Pump failing?? (was Noise in transmission) - 05-01-2005 , 10:56 AM

IT seems the noise I've been hearing in the passenger area is coming
form the mid-section of my Nissan Quest. As far as I can tell now, the
buzzing is coming from the gas tank and is probably the fuel pump.

My question is, if the buzzing/mumming noise is coming from the fuel
pump, is the pump about to fail, or is this a "normal" noise for an old
(1995) NIssan Quest with over 175,000 miles?

TIA for any tips, suggestions, comment.

When's the last time you changed the fuel filter?

The fuel pump is located in the tank. Pump can make a buzzing noise for
some time before it fails. I replace one on my old 95 quest at 120K mi. a
few years ago, failed right after filling tank up.
If you plan to replace pump youself.
Suggest dropping tank when on empty, for easy of removal and installing
back on van.
Cost of pump is approx $150.

JimV,

Never. When I bought it less than a year ago, everything was supposed
to be "up to date."

I think I have a fuel filter (left over form my 95 Pathfinder, in the
garage. If not, I'll buy one and install it.

Thanks for the suggestion.

jjjsan,

thanks for the information. If changing the fuel filter doesn't make
any difference, I'll install a new fuel pump before the next long trip.

The Haynes manual makes the job sound straight forward. I think
backing the van up some 14 inch ramps should give me enough room to
drop the tank.

Thanks,

Manjo

Plan on lowering tank when empty.
Use car jack for lowering and raising into place.
check hose on the tank and replace as required.
Mail order part for max saving.
