Default lost first gear - 06-06-2005 , 05:35 PM

i was driving my manual 5 speed 1997 nissan pathfinder when the
shifter began to shake when i was in first gear. the shaking stopped
when i shifted up to 2nd. when i downshifted a few minutes later i
heard a bang and then i was unable to get the car into 1st gear. the
shifter moved up but all i got was grinding. i tried to rev a little
to see if it was the clutch but to no avail.

i am able to shift into all the other gears and so far have been
managing to drive the car. i just need to start from 2nd
gear--avoiding hills naturally.

there are no other effects--no slipping, no other noises, nada.

this is not like the clutch is gone. in that case the shifter will
not even move. in this case the shifter will move with the clutch
depressed but the gear will just not engage.

what have i done? help please

jeff

Are you able to get it into 1st gear with the engine off? How about on
flat ground with the engine idling?
