Default Murano Navigation System Is Really Annoying - 07-20-2003 , 11:48 PM

When I get in my Murano and fire it up I am confronted with a legal
disclaimer on my screen everytime I start the car. If I dont acknowledge
this dumb message my navigation system will not work. The message was
cute the first couple of times I got in the car but now it's really
beginning to piss me off. Does anyone know how to permanently bypass
this screen. Is there a service DVD I could use to modify the start-up
parameters?

Thanks
Dan

If you find one, post it. I suspect everyone who has one of these will want
to hack in the change.

My Pathfinder nav also will not allow the destination to be changed while
the car is moving, which is a much more debilitating "feature". If you ask
them about it, they will say it is a legal requirement. It is not. Acura's
nav is fully functional whether the car is moving or not.

Not a good idea to be messing with the nav while you're driving. Nissan
isn't considering that you just might have a passenger that wan't to make
changes for the drive. Kind of anal retentive thinking.

Absolute, unmitigated, BS. The same argument applies to the A/C controls,
the radio, the CD player, the phone, etc. Yes, in an ideal world, everyone
would pull off the road and stop before touch anything other than the
steering wheel, but why is the nav system the only thing that big brother
has succeeded in locking us out of? And at that, only Nissan's nav.

I have been using the Acura nav since 2000 and it does not have that asinine
restriction. I can't count the number of times it has been used to plot a
path on the fly after being forced off-route by accidents or other
emergencies. The system will automatically plot alternate routes if it was
already in use, but if it wasn't, the Acura allows a destination to be
entered on the fly and Nissan doesn't. Many times it is not possible to
pull off the road to do it in the utopianesque world envisioned by Nissan.

Yes, if you need to program something complicated, the wife sitting in the
passenger seat is really handy for punching it in.

Hey don't jump on me. I was giving you Nissan's argument, not mine. I
couldn't care less what you do while you drive. You can get a shave and
haircut while you drive for all i care.

Sorry if you don't like my style of tact, but after having spent the cash
for this thing it really pisses me off when Nissan especially, but pretty
much anybody else as well has the gall to start telling me how I shouldn't
be able to use it. I hope the ink turns invisible on all their maps the
next time they glance at one while the car is moving.

You didn't preface your remarks as being "Nissan's argument", and I will
hazard to guess you have never seen one of these things, much less ever
tried to use it.

Go back and read my entire reply. I identified my remarks at the end of my
reply as what I thought Nissan took on the situation. I had no reason to
embelish them upon you personally.

Now now boys lets not get too heated over this discusion. I appreciate
all views here but by no means did I want to start a battle among my
brethren. Now lets get back to the real problem at hand....what can we
do to eliminate this. I have looked at the mapping DVD in my system to
see if there was some kind of editable start-up file but no-luck.
Someone with some real knowledge of machine code is going to have to
take a look at this. Also I can guarantee you that there is a version of
this DVD out there that has this DISCLAIMER message removed. The legal
message must be supplied by the DVD. It only shows after the system has
booted via the DVD. The manufacturer of this system, XANAVI, makes this
same system for other cars and I am certain, with the intention of
keeping manufacturing costs low, that all of these systems use the same
operating engine but different software via DVD patches. Perhaps someone
in the SERVICE/MANAGEMENT arena of a Nissan dealer has one of these
Super DVD's.
