Default sun roof is confused - 02-20-2006 , 07:50 PM

2001 nissan path fndr - sun roof works if you push button over and over to
close or open, it will go about twoinches then I push button again and it
goes another two inches, it used to be push button once and sun roof would
open all the way and close all the way with out all this hurkey jerky stuff.
any suggestions of what could be wrong?

If it were me, the first place I would look would be in the switch
itself. Is it dirty, worn, broken?

It has lost its memory of where the glass is. Mine did this when I replaced
the battery. If you work it all the way open and then all the way closed (2
inches at a time...), it should re-learn and start working correctly again.

My 2002 Pathfinder has the exact same problem. I have tried the above
several times without any luck. I resorted to leaving it closed for
the last year. Please post the resolution if you get it working
correctly.

in my parents caterra, there was a procedure in the owners manual to
reset/relearn the positions. Don't know if this applies to Nissan at all...

My '01 PF had this problem. Dealer replaced the motor assembly on
warantee. It worked for a month and started doing it again. That was
a couple of years ago, and it's been doing it ever since. I just went out to
try the "learning" trick belowm and it worked. BEFORE I did the learning trick.
Wierd.

However, it's clear that this is a common problem. I got an e-mail a couple
of days ago from someone who read my original post on the problem.

I fixed mine! It was the memory, just like the previous poster said,
but closing it and opening it all day long won't fix it. Here's what
I did: I closed it all the way then pulled the power window fuse for
a few seconds then put it back in. Now it works perfectly.

I had the same problem in my 2003 Pathfinder. My owners manual had the
answer:

With roof fully closed, press and hold the "tilt down" button for more
than one second.

This fixed mine.

Well, over the winter, the problem came back. I tried the "learning" trick, and
it didn't help. I tried pulling the fuses (#11 and #24), and it didn't help.
Any ideas?

According to the FSM, what is happening is that the cpu in the sunroof motor
has detected an "interruption" during an automatic close operation and the 5
inch move is the fail-safe action. It detects this by monitoring the limit
switch and an encoder built into the motor.

Here is the diagnostic procedure in the fsm for "Power sunroof cannot be
opened or closed fully." (this seems to be the closest diagnostic to this
problem):

1. Initialize full closed position.
2. Check the following.
a. Check obstacles in sunroof, etc.
b. Check worn or deformed sunroof.
c. Check sunroof sash tilted too far inward or outward.
3. Check sunroof switch.
4. Check harness between sunroof motor and sunroof
switch.
5. Replace sunroof motor.

The "official" learning trick from the FSM is slightly different from the
process that worked for me a couple times before (see below), though from my
experience with my '02 it doesn't always work either. The book says "Set
lid assembly to fully closed position by operating OPEN switch and TILT
switch. After the lid has closed all the way, keep pushing the tilting
switch toward tilt DOWN for more than 1 second."

My sunroof forgot how to close last summer after a 75 mile run on the
interstate with the sunroof open. It completely lost tract of where
"closed" was and would not respond to any of the likely reinitialization
procedures that have been posted. It didn't work right for about two weeks,
then one day the "keep holding the tilt switch" trick suddenly worked and it
has been fine ever since. I'm thinking something got stuck (limit switch?)
and after a couple of weeks popped loose and started working again all by
itself.
