I have been floundering looking for a new car. Toyota is struggling with a six speed automatic transmission that seems to be troublesome Honda is a shithorse to drive. Too stiff, hard over bumps. Volkswagen seems to cling to electrics issues, and dealership hostility. Now, Nissan seems to only offer manual trannies OR suspiciously vulnerable CVT trannies. American cars are out for now. What do you all feel about Nissan, and the CVT tranny they offer?? |

"suspiciously vulnerable CVT"? This is the first I've heard of any vulnerabilities. Care to elaborate? |

I'm assuming you're talking Entry-level Nissan?? Nissan waited and sweated the engineering for years before plunging in, you can be sure. DAF (in the 60's) and Subaru (in the 80's) have already plunged into these waters long ago. Driving a CVT is, well, different. I drove a Subaru Justy (probably called something else in everywhere but in Canada) for a while. You get slower takeoff, but a smooth application of power. AFAIK with Nissan's smallest offering (forgotten the name at the moment - not in the market for one) they offer a CVT and a normal manual shift, and on up-market versions an Automatic, so you can choose. At least that's what "Driving Television" a Canadian show I saw said a few weeks ago. With the Nissan, you supposedly get better mileage than the Auto, and almost good if not equal to the manual. I wouldn't tow trailers or anything, but to get around town, I'm sure the CVT will be fine. New cars have warranties, anyway. |
