Default Nissan - 01-28-2007 , 06:16 PM

I have been floundering looking for a new car.

Toyota is struggling with a six speed automatic transmission that seems to
be troublesome
Honda is a shithorse to drive. Too stiff, hard over bumps.
Volkswagen seems to cling to electrics issues, and dealership hostility.

Now, Nissan seems to only offer manual trannies OR suspiciously vulnerable
CVT trannies.

American cars are out for now.

What do you all feel about Nissan, and the CVT tranny they offer??

"suspiciously vulnerable CVT"? This is the first I've heard of any
vulnerabilities. Care to elaborate?

AFAIK, the CVT has proven to be reliable.

Look at the Murano, Nissan's 1st vehicle with a CVT. Great success,
very reliable. What's it been, 4 years now? Also, looking at the
bigger picture, Nissan was the 1st car company to mass produce a CVT
mated to a very powerful and torquey V6. Powerful motors are a
transmission's worst enemy.

Nissan CVT? No worries.

Many of the early designs from other manufacturers were, because of their
complexity
and construction, prone to problems and very expensive to repair or replace.

From this comes my suspicion of vulnerability, and I am please to find out
that Nissan
seems to have tamed the technology.

I am very disappointed with VW's ratings, as I know they are a company which
could
make improvements overnight IF they would do so.

The Toyota six speed is disquieting since they apparently had a bulletproof
unit, and
switched it out to something of questionable repute.

I know cars cant last forever, but I really want the best I can get for my
buck.

Thanks all

I'm assuming you're talking Entry-level Nissan??

Nissan waited and sweated the engineering for years before plunging in, you
can be sure. DAF (in the 60's) and Subaru (in the 80's) have already
plunged into these waters long ago. Driving a CVT is, well, different. I
drove a Subaru Justy (probably called something else in everywhere but in
Canada) for a while. You get slower takeoff, but a smooth application of
power.

AFAIK with Nissan's smallest offering (forgotten the name at the moment -
not in the market for one) they offer a CVT and a normal manual shift, and
on up-market versions an Automatic, so you can choose. At least that's what
"Driving Television" a Canadian show I saw said a few weeks ago. With the
Nissan, you supposedly get better mileage than the Auto, and almost good if
not equal to the manual.

I wouldn't tow trailers or anything, but to get around town, I'm sure the
CVT will be fine. New cars have warranties, anyway.

I went to the NissanUSA website, and looked at Maxima and Altima. Maybe I
was not diligent enough, but I believe your only choices are the CVY or the
six
speed manual.

Wife will not tolerate a manual, I am afraid.

I have been hearing some complaints about CVTs from other manufacturers,
but -honestly- you mostly hear the complaints rather than the accolades.

The 2 words that can best describe the Nissan X-Tronic CVT transmission is
"Bullet Proof"

In my 18 years as a technician with Nissan I can say that I have not seen a
more reliable transmission than the CVT

Believe me , I had my doubts. But since 2003 , which is when the CVT debut I
have only seen 2 failures of the CVT and both were not due to a mechanical
failure(internally oiled part).

I'd buy one in a heart beat

I have 119K on my Murano and the CVT is still as sweet as the first day I
drove it home. Recently had the dealer check to see if the tranny fluid
needed changed, (they do a computer test of some type)... and was told it
was fine and no service was needed.
