I have 1994 sentra E, with 5 speed manual transmission. I wonder what is the "neutral switch" used for in this car. It shorts signal to ground when the control lever is in the neutral position - what does my car need it for ? |

To make sure that the car only starts in neutral? |

"Neutral start" switches are only on automatic transmissions... I guess you're talking about the switch that only allows starting the vehicle when the clutch is depressed. This is a safety feature. |

It tells the engine managenment system you are in neutral. Short of going though the machine code stored in your rom, operation code by operation code it's not possible to tell what it does. But it may not use the same fuel and ignition curves when the negine is not under load and may have a harder cutoff for the limiter rpm. |

No, I have separate neutral switch in the lower left side of transmission. Not far away from the backing light switch. Safety feature - yes, I have clutch sensor too - dont think they both are related. |

Had a look though diagnostics for my 200SX (UK RS13 turbo), Symptom and conditions for things that implicate the Neutral switch. 5 Hard to start - before warm up. 7 Hard to start - every time. 19 Engine stall - while idling (neutral switch remaining off) Looks like it's used to set stable idle at no load using things like alternator voltage instead of rpm. |

So I guess it's only for fault diagnosis... used by the ECU. I would refrain from disconnecting or you may trigger the check engine light due to codes being set. Neutral switch is used to stop the cruise control from blowing your engine if you slip the trans. out of gear under cruise - it only affects start on automatics. Watch out for advice that starts with "I guess" - it could get you a blown motor in this case. Also, you can HOOK UP YOUR REMOTE STARTER WIRE with no problems, as long as it is a good quality system. The transmission harness/engine harness junction would be a good place to tap in to it. |
