Default X-Trail opinions please - 2.2dCi SE or 2.5 Sport ? - 04-26-2005 , 04:12 PM

Current company car list actually has a couple of X-Trails on it !

I can get a 2.5 Sport as a demo for a few days soon, but wanted comments
from actual X-Trail drivers out there.

If I choose one it'll hit the occasional green lane for recreational
purposes - so it's not a "true" work horse.

The bulk of the mileage will be c/o the UKs motorways.

So - 2.2 dCi SE or 2.5 petrol Sport ?

Thanks in advance,
Roy

I cant speak for the 2.5 Petrol but I have had a 2.2 DCi Sport since
december and am more than happy with it. I guess that fuel consumption wont
be an issue for you but I get about 32mpg if im driving with a heavy right
foot and can get 43mpg if I take it steady on the motorways. It will do
115mph (all the books say 112) which is indicated on 2 GPS units i have in
the car.

I do use the car off road as my work sometimes takes me to tops of decent
hills up rough and muddy trackes fields and find it not too bad at all for a
"soft roader". Not as good as a hilux I had a while back, but still good.
You may feel a difference off road between the 2 engines, as the diesel will
have more torgue at low engine speeds where you will need it off-road.

Once moving I dont find the engine noisy, and indeed the quietest I diesel
cat I have had to date. It does actually make quite a nice noise.

Id recommed that you try and take a test drive of both of them, even if its
a second hand one (make sure its a 04 plate though) as the engine was only
112bhp before then, now its 136bhp.

I have just seen a Nissan Pathfinder, wonder if finances will run to 24k for
one of them when I come to change....... mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Any questions then feel free to ask

Steve

Thanks for that Steve,

I've got a demo 2.5 Sport coming tomorrow (hopefully !), not sure if I'll
get chance to try a 2.2 dCi SE as the company limits the number of demos we
can order - after a team leader had 29 ! before deciding he wanted an Astra
! >)

I'm going to try and get a long run or two using the 2.5 as I often work a
fair distance away and need to make sure it's compatible with my backside !
I can always see if a local dealer will let me have a go in the 2.2 so I can
get a feel for the differences.

I'll be jealous if you do find the 24k ! - The X-Trail is the first 4x4
that's appeared at my grade on our company list in 15 years !

I always wanted a 4 cab Hilux (Must've been the Back to the Future influence
from childhood) but it was never an option as I'm told I need a "secure"
boot for carrying the kit we're told we're not insured to carry - Don't ask
!?!?!?!

I'll post back some thoughts when I've had a play.

Cheers,
Roy

Hope to receive my 2.2 dCi T Spec on Saturday. will report my
feelings/experiences within a couple of weeks. I am trading in a 2L diesel
806 peugeot GTX in exchange, which is a very comfortable vehicle.
Cheers
Tom

Nice choice, I think the only thing not included as standard is a kitchen
sink !

Roy,best bet is to go along to a nissan dealer and arrange a test drive. If
they have a second hand one on the forcourt then they will probably give you
a go that day if you seem interested enough.

The SE is a lower spec than the sport, although not a big difference. Id
imagine that the cost of the 2.5 petrol sport would be more than a 2.2dci
T-spec or SVE so why not get the diesel but higher model?

I drove a 53 plate before i bought mine. It wasnt a t-spec but had lots of
extras on it like the safari lights. The jury is still out with me about the
safari lights. Not sure that they do anything for the look of the car at
all. I probably could of afforded a SVE or T-spec but they come with
sat-nav. I have my own Sat-nav system via a PDA so the extra money for the
higher model would of been pointless, plus DVD sat nav as standard is no
where near as flexible as sat nav on a PDA etc.

I used to have a Zafira 2.0 DTI 16V. I had it super-chipped from 100bhp to
around 130bhp. I thought that was pretty rapid for the type of car but the
Nissan at 136bhp is much faster and more refined to boot. You can get them
chipped to about 160bhp.

<snip>

As of late Friday sfternooon, driving around in a Nissan 2.5 Sport demo -
straight from Nissan, delivered with 142 miles on the clock ! - Mmmmmm new
car smell ( a smell scarily the same as that of the A reg Sunny my dad
bought new - now that's consistancy.)

Baring in mind I've been driving an Alfa 156 veloce for the last 3 years for
work, and at weekends a VX220 for the last year, here are my thoughts so
far -

Looks -
It's a black one, my first choice colour - I have taste ! it looks great -
but I think I'll need dark windows for the rears.
Interior is better than I expected - loads of vents & compartments, and I'm
getting used to a centre speedo - thought I'd hate that, but it's OK.

Use -
Is it just me, or in 2WD mode is it as easy to spin the wheels as a spinney
spinner after an extra dose of spin ?
But in Auto mode launch is sweet )
I miss the wipe option that doesn't involve a "click" - you know what I
mean, gentle touch of stem, and you get a single wipe - however I am
confident I'll get used to this.
First couple of corners were a bit hairy due to habits formed from sports
suspension, but now I'm concentrating on driving in an appropriate manner
it's sweet.
Found I was working down the gears more than expected on long hills
(Woodhead Manchester bound), I guess the dCi would've coped better, but as
it's be the SE it'd not look as cool.

Comfort -
I know it's been toasty weather this weekend, but it seems really warm - a
blast of aircon then freezes me, but it does seem warmer than anything else
I've driven ?!?! - Apparently the Alfa's got heat reflective glass, which
may make the difference.
Baldy head got a little warm with the sunroof open, but that's head rather
than car related )

I've got the car until Friday 6th, so will post more then.

Roy

The dark windows do look good, make sure you get them done properly and they
actually take out the glass in the doors rather than trying to do it glass
in situ. Im told that for best effect leave the front glass as it is, the
rear passanger slightly darker and then the boot glass really dark.

You have to remember they have m+s tyres on and there is quite a bit of
power going through them for the type of tyre. Mine will spin like that too
if I floor it but will tend to boot it more once im in second.

Yeah, thats a strange thing to leave off eh? suppose that the variable
intermitant wipe is to make up for that?

Its not a sports car at the end of the day!

Have to say the DCi I have has no problems with gear changing, The Dci of
course has 6 gears

Why would it be the SE? Can you not get a dci sport or SVE for same as a
petrol t-spec?

Its got climate control, set the dial to 20 odds and keep the windows shut
and enjoy
