Default Z32 Strut replacement... - 05-02-2005 , 02:46 PM

I have a '91 300ZX (2+2) that is in dire needs of new struts in the
rear and I have a few questions...

1) What is recommended to get me the best bang for my buck. (Be as
specific as possible - suspension isn't my thing.)

2) Is this something that I can do myself, or is it a massive
headache? I've never done struts before, but I'm more than familiar
with a wrench. (I did the alternator, power steering pump, etc and
that all turned out fine - how involved is replacing the struts?)

Thanks....

The factory struts aren't bad..

Main bitch is you have to remove ALL the plastic from the interior in the
back of the car to get to the upper mounts.

So what about the lower mounts? How much do I need to mess with the
axle? Am I going to need any special tools to keep the body from
mashing my face in when I'm down there?

Have you looked at this part of the car yet? It's pretty self explanitory,
there is one bolt...

You don't.

???? Again have you even looked under there yet? And if you think you could
hurt yourself trying this then DON'T attempt it.

Nope, I haven't looked yet. I have been looking through Nissan's
repair manual though, and it's right after axel removal, hence my
question. (It's not exactly well written.)

I just wanted to know from someone who has done it first-hand is all...

Thanks for your replies...

One more question...

My struts are obviously bad and in need of replacement, but how can I
tell if I need to replace the springs as well? If I just replaced the
struts and kept my current springs, would that be a stupid decision?
These springs at 130+ each isn't exactly cheap...

I highly doubt there is anything wrong with the springs.
