Default 87 climate control blower - 12-12-2008 , 01:50 PM

My 87 in cab blower motor won't run but compressor, fuses, radiator fans
are OK.

Blower motor and their 15A fuses has only 2 volts which should be +12v.
All other fused accessories are operating. Is there a relay or two
behind the A/C control box which controls the voltage to the blower 15A
fuses? My 87 Service Manual does not indicate exactly how +12v is routed
to the 15 amp fuses. Mechanics test indicates a 'short' between the 15A
fuses and blower motor. They suspect the A/C computer control box or
relays behind it.

I need help with removing the A/C computer.

I want to test the blower motor by applying power to it. The blower
connector is too close to kick panel to see the two contacts or attach
wires without the special connector. I need to buy the mating connector
with wires which attaches to the blower motor. Where can I buy such a
connector?

Thanks, Dave_s

Why not cut the wires to the connector, do your tests then solder them
back together and wrap with insulating tape.

I had a blower motor problem in my 93 Taurus recently. I tested the
blower moter, it was OK. Problem turned out to be a corroded wring
harness under the hood which supplied power to the blower motor and
many other components. Cleaning and spaying with WD40 fixed the
problem.

I believe there is also the possibility of a "blower motor resistor"
failure but I think if it fails then the motor will run but only at
its fastest speed.

Golden Rule: 50% of all electrical problems are faulty connections.

Good suggestion.

I sure can do this blower motor test. If the blower motor is OK as I
suspect it is, I am still not sure exactly which wiring harness and
connectors to measure for poor connections.

In my MAXIMA, I believe the MOST suspect wiring is inside
the cab. Instead of +12v at the blower's 15AMP fuse, voltage is only 2
volts. Voltage to blower is also only 2v. My SERVICE MANUAL does not
clearly identify which wiring harness sends +12v to the blower fuses.
Looks like fuse gets +12v from steering column key switch, but not
sure. Instead +12v may be from relay behind A/C computer. But all other
accessories ARE working OK which eliminates the key switch faults.
My biggest problem is removing all of the in-the-cab plastic
decorations/covers to expose the A/C computer and wiring harnesses.

My A/C is an AUTOMATIC model that does BLOWER speed control from the
A/C computer. The "blower motor resistor" is used in MANUAL A/C models,
not mine.

I sure believe that.

Thank you, Dave_S
