Have you had someone stand outside with the hood open and see if they
can hear where this noise is coming from when you turn off the car.

It could well be a failed motor mount,,,not a good thing to be driving
around with.

Yes after the key is off - powers down after the ignition key is

"Groaning" is now turning to rather loud "clunking" after key turned
off. Is this building up to something tragic?

electric motor mount,,,?

my 2000 has one,,,it adjusts depending on speed. Sometimes I do hear a
slight noise from that.

Thanks; I'll ask dealer tomorrow. Mine happens ONLY after turning off
key. Yours?

Yes, immediately after turning off the ignition. Doesn't matter if
short or long drive. NOT a clicking sound. Best way I could describe
it was "groaning" or "sighing". This is my first Nissan, so don't
know if it's "normal". Sorry, can't think of anything to add...

Sorry - but I can't think of what you might be hearing. Perhaps it is
the power antenna retracting?

Doesn't retract.

do you normally have the radio on prior
to turning off the car?

Always.

Thanks for your input. I have to go to the dealer to get a lug nut
fixed on wheel, and will ask them.

I guess you didn't make the trip to the dealer yet? Are you still
driving on 4 lugs?

Ay, chihuahua! Now I AM concerned! Will carry out experiment as
you suggest, with hood open. Note, however, that noise seems to
be coming from the BACK of the car.

Just a wild guess: in that case it could be a loose exhaust mount or
some other defect in that area.

Thanks for asking.

I finally did get down there. It took 2 trips, because I was
scheduled too tightly and had to leave before they called me.
Second time was the charm; they fixed the lug nut, no charge,
as having been a previous defect and a safety hazard.

In all the running around, I forgot to ask them about the
groaning/clunking. Guess I'll see if my local mechanic
will give a listen, before I schlep all the way down to CarMax
again. I do have a wrap-around warranty, so it would be
taken care of with a small co-pay; it's just the time and
hassle... but I'd better not let it go.

Mmm..OK, will make a note of that for when I go back to dealer.
Thanks.

Folks, hope this isn't boring the pants off you -- I value all the
inputs so I have some "ammunition" when I go to mechanic.

I have now isolated the groan-which-has-become a-clunk
to the RIGHT REAR of the car.

Hope that gives you more information to pin-point problem.

TIA

BINGO!!!!

I had a knowledgeable friend give a listen today, and he immediately
homed in on the power antenna. Seems it is stuck, so can't retract
and groans.

Whew! THAT is a load off my mind!!!

Thanks to you and all who chimed in on this.

I suggested that it might be the antenna weeks ago! I have repeated the
text of my post from Mon, Sep 25 2006 11:00am below again to jog your
memory

"Sorry - but I can't think of what you might be hearing. Perhaps it is

Glad you got to the bottom of it, perhaps the long way around.
