Possible CV Joint Issue?

Hello,

Our 97 Max has started to click/clunk in the front end while making
left hand turns. I suspect the CV joints. The inner and outter boots
have not split open, but I assume they will need to be replaced. Can I
replace the boots and re-grease the CV joints? Or will I have to
replace parts? The car has 150K and I would like to get another year
out of it and really don't want to sink a ton of money into it.

I think you already know the answer to your question.

With 150K on the 97 Max surely it's going to need some replacment parts

You can try the quick fix of re-grease the CV joints if possible but it's
anyone guess how long it will be until they really just fail.

face it you put some money into the old Max or trade it off.

Check around. I was able to buy reconditioned CV joints [including new
boots] for my '93 Maxima for under $100 each and have them installed
for not too much. Maybe you would be able to do a similar thing.

Thats a possibility....But I was think about it today and thought that
the tie rods may be my problem also. Guess I need to put it on the
ramps and have a look again. The outer boots will have to be replaced
due to the cracking. I guess I'm trying to justify another car. The
bride likes the 07 Altima, me, I like the old car with no
payments.......

probably not CV joint if the boot is intact.

I'd look at possible upper strut bearings and or insulators

You can find out for sure if its the CV joint by listening to the way it

makes its sounds. Is the clickety clack sound slow when you move from a
stoplight, making a left turn? Also, is the clickety clack fast when you
change lane on the highway? The CV joint failure sound is directly
related to how fast the wheel is spinning in a turn.

hey Flan,
The way i typically check out if its a CV is check the boot. look to see if
its torn and or split. Which will sling out the grease thats in it. Tie rod
end is also a possiblility, usually i just get my wife to rock the steering
wheel back and forth and check to see if there is any excess movement in the
tie rod end.
