Default 94 grand am - auto trans noisy when in DRIVE - 08-07-2006 , 08:54 PM

The engine in this car threw a rod and locked the engine. After replacing
the engine, the transmission makes a groaning noise while in forward gear,
even when not moving. Sounds okay in Park, Rev, Neutral. The sound is almost
like a bare brake shoe grinding on a scored rotor. It's not the brakes or CV
joint. It makes noise while sitting still.

The car will move...its been down the street about 500 feet and back since
the engine was replaced. I'm afraid to run it since it may cause more
damage.

Any ideas what can get damaged with a sudden stop when an engine locks?
Other reasons?

Transmissions can have so many different failures, we have no way of telling
what happened until you open it up. Check your fluid level, and COLOR of the
fluid and get back to us.

Fluid level is good. Color was dark but still red-ish. I replaced the filter
and fluid-just in case. The sound is still there. A friend said it may be a
stretched chain that connects to the input shaft behind the TC. I'm dropping
it out tomorrow. We'll see. The transmission is a 4T60E.

I have the ATSG manual for that transmission. When you drop it, start at the
passenger side of the transmission and pull the differential cover off
first. Just a couple of bolts. Look at the differential. If it looks ok then
put the cover back on. Then you can start at the drivers side and pull the
side cover off. If you want, need any specific information, email me and I
can help you through this. My 4T60E is sitting on my work bench in my
basement right now. Just awaiting $45 gaskets. THATS just 2 that I need. I
also have a boat load of pictures of this transmission torn apart also for
