Default 99 Grand Prix Overheats w/AC on - 07-20-2006 , 11:12 AM

On these really hot summer days (100-degrees), I'm unable to run my air
conditioner without overheating the engine. I've taken the car in to a
TUNEX to have the thing checked out, and the only thing they found was
semi-old coolant. They replaced this and it helped a little.

They checked the fan as well, and it turns on more or less when it's
supposed to (i.e. as soon as I turn the AC on). Here's the scenario...

Only during the heat of the day, if I turn the AC on in relatively slow
traffic, the temp climbs quickly to 210, then climbs steadily to the
red zone. The TEMP light comes on. If I turn off the AC and keep
driving, the TEMP light goes off within a minute or two. If I drive
for 20-30 mins with the AC off, the temp returns to 210 (the normal
running temp).

If the car is running hot (when the guage is maybe 3/4 the way to the
red zone) and I turn the engine off for a short time, when I turn it
back on, the temp is maxed out and the TEMP light is on. Isn't there a
fan that is supposed to run even when the engine isn't running?

This has to have something to do with the AC, but I don't want to go
get raped by the Pontiac dealer until I absolutely have to. I've
already had an argument with the dealer over their insistance that I
had to replace the original battery with an "authentic Pontiac battery"
instead of an "aftermarket" one from AutoZone to avoid voiding my
warranty.

Plus, I've already spent $160 to have the coolant changed and I'd like
to avoid doing that again if I can.

Does the fan kick on immediately after turning on the A/c? If not you have a
switch bad. If so than I dont know what to suggest, maybe thermostat
sticking.

if the temp is normal with the air off, it seems maybe you have 2
fans? and one isnt running with the air on. if all seems well on the
fans running constsnt with air on, you may need new radiator.

If I turn the key to 'ON' but leave the engine off, then turn the AC
on, the switch light comes on, but I don't hear any noise at all.
Should the fan come on at that point?

I was digging around under the hood again and I noticed that there are
two fans on the back of the radiator. Does anyone know which one cools
the AC radiator? Is there a separate radiator for the AC? (there was
in my last car...)

When I start the car and turn the AC on (from a cold engine state), I
hear a click... like a clutch engaging. The engine drags down a bit
and the RPMs go up to compensate. I don't really notice any other
change in fan noise. Maybe my fan isn't working after all... it would
explain a lot (except why Tunex said it was fine).

I'm in hot as hell south florida, and a tranny cooler helped my
overheating situation.

just a thought
