Default fuel delivery problems - 09-19-2009 , 08:24 PM

85 pontiac Fiero G.T. 2.8 L 206k miles with a new fuel pump.
when driving the vehicle the fuel pump makes a humming noise, but will get
real quiet and then the engine acts as if it is starving for gas if i turn
the ignition off and let the car coast for 10 or 15 seconds and then restart
the engine the fuel pump gets loud again and the engine has power again.

any help would be appreciated

Check inline fuel filter. If OK pull pump and check inlet sock.
Might be a good idea to put a test lamp across the power leads to the
pump and see if there is still power to the pump when it "goes quiet"
If there is power and both filters are good, replace the pump while
you have it out. Brushes on the pump motor could be all "used up" at
206K miles.

Fuel pumps can fail after 500 miles or after 500, 000 miles. They are
very unpredictable that way.

OPS. Was the problem the same before the pump was replaced?
Check the power situation and if the power goes out check the oil
pressure safety switch that is supposed to shut the engine down on low
oil pressure.
Make sure you HAVE oil pressure - then replace the switch (ofter
checking for bad connections)
