Default What do I need to read out codes - 10-08-2004 , 11:39 AM

I'm still struggling with my '93 Bonneville running rough; on cold starts I get
a check engine light. The local guys gouge for reading out the codes; one
alternative I've had luck with in the past is to buy a scanner on eBay and use
it until I'm done with the car. (I did this on my '80s GM cars with no net
outlay).

I can't seem to figure out exactly what unit is required with this car, though.
Any help appreciated. (Alternatively, anybody in the Raleigh/RTP area with
the ability to do this can let me know!).

I just had mine scanned at Hedrix Cary AutoMall. They charged $95.00
to scan it and that is applied that against the repair. The repair was
a clogged EGR valve cavity and was $122.00 to fix. So the repair bill
was $122.00 and now my car is inspected so I'm happy.

Try having Autozone or other of the chain parts stores read the codes.
Since your system is an OBD-1 you can probably DIY by shorting a couple of
the pins in the ALDL connector. Do a google search on obd-1. I'm hesitant
to tell you what 2 pins to short 'cause I haven't had an OBD-1 system for
some time.

Hm. I meant to mention that AutoZone (which has a sign saying they will read
out codes for you) told me my car is too old. Maybe I will call a different AZ
and see if they can do it.

A 93 is obdi compliant. If all you want are the stored codes,
then a paperclip will work just fine.
However, to read the serial data stream you will need
an obdi reader.
There are many links on the net on how to use the paperclip.

Wow! That's pathetic. Apparently they forgot where to put the paper clip.
That's just sad.
