Default 993 brake squeak - 11-16-2006 , 01:43 AM

anyone know for sure if upon pad replacement you are to discard the factory
"snap" like things that are glued to the factory pads? these things aren't
mentioned in the 993 service manual, they aren't in the PET and they don't
come with new pads - I'm wondering if keeping these things in the system is
a contributor to making my brakes squeak loudly -

Yeah, I know, squeaking is a safety feature....

ok, ok, so it won't stop the squeak - but do those little snap things belong
there with replacement pads or are they just a factory thing?

Sheesh, mine squeak with or without them. Some days it's really bad.
Ear-splitting even.

They are called "hats" by us porsche techs, (pad insulators) and yes, they
are supposed to be replaced at pad renewal time.

I don't know about the "snap like things," but squeaking is usually caused
by vibration. I've let the pros do brakejobs on my Porsche, with no
squeaking, but I used to put a little antiseize grease on the "backs" of the
pads when I did my own work. Stopped most if not all squeaks.

I'm using OEM pads, which have a built in "membrane" that does this - but I
really want to know if the "snap like things" are a thing that is only used
from the factory or if I should be trying to find some new ones.

Are you referring to the shims? They are round with a star like
pattern. If so they should be replaced (2 per pad) they reduce pad
movement/vibration. You should also be using Pagid pads any other
brands are primarily used for racing (great stopping power, but squeak
to the point that any dogs in a 10 mile radius will hate you). I
would use both the shims and the Pagid pads unless you like your pride
and joy to sound like a dump truck. JMHO
