Default Adivce on second hand / pre-owned 911 - 03-27-2007 , 11:46 PM

Hi,

I am thinking of purchasing this Porsche 911 Carrera 4 1991, 78,000
miles.

http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...6&aff=national

Any advice on what I should look out for?

Thanks
Gene

i have no technical advice for you(i'm not a technical person)

but great-looking 911
i love the color combo...black ext, tan leather int. - i personally think
that's one of the best combos for the 911
i love the twist wheels as well - those are the most distincitive, looks
great spinning slowly.

There were some engine and dual distributor drive belt issues with some of
the 1990 and 1991 964/911 series. You'll want to make sure that these have
been checked/modified/replaced as necessary.

Always, always have a good shop do a pre-purchase inspection before
consummating the sale. It can be a real life saver and insure that you're
not buying a "money pit".

Good luck.

i forgot...as a general-rule-of-thumb, you should buy the latest year model
porsche you can afford - and steer clear of the older models, if possible

The first part is spot on, but the last part could use some major
clarification.
I'm with Robert there, and will add this: first you should decide
which generation 911 you want, then shoot for the latest example. As
resale values are showing, not everyone that can afford a 996 wants
one - they're spending the money on 993s. Others prefer the hairy ride
of a short wheelbase early car, or the rawness of the 70s cars, while
still others picture the 80s Carrera when they think 911. Once you've
selected which generation you want, sure, the latest version is likely
where you want to go.
Personally, my dream 911 is a '67 911S. I tend to like early
production examples of most things - cars, books, music. You tend to
get more of what the artists/designers intends, and less of what the
marketers thought everyone wanted. That desire tends to go against
what every buyer's guide will tell you.
