Check out the top. Look at the cables that go from the two top
transmissions to the top motor. The ends that plug into the motor
(they just pull out and go right back in, so pull them out to look)
should stick out of their housing by about 3/4 inch. Also make sure
the top transmissions (one on each side) are aligned properly. Check
out the top relay located above the fuse box in the drivers side
footwell. Check out the push arms that move the top up and down. A lot
of the top parts are plastic and can crack over time.

Ask if any of those parts have been replaced. If they have it's
probably a good thing, if not then just make sure everything works
correctly.

Most of the problems with the tops are an easy fix if you catch them
early but dealerships won't look at older top problems. They'll just
tell you to replace everything with updated parts. That can cost a lot
of money, especially for something that can be fixed without too much
hassle.

Boxsters are pretty bulletproof if they've been maintained. The
Renntech forums are a good place to get info - http://www.renntech.org/

Other than that just check the normal stuff. Oil changes (aim for
everything 5k miles or so with mobile 1 synthetic), check the front
end alignment (back tires are wider so they can't be rotated,
unnecessary tire wear has a big effect), ask how many miles are on the
clutch (90k miles might need a new one), and check if it's had a 90k
mile servicing.

When you're done with your own inspections and are ready to buy, bring
it to a mechanic who specializes in Porsche or German cars to inspect
it. It's a small cost up front that I recommend for all used cars
from private sellers.

Rear main seals check for leaks also i would recommend getting the car
checked by either your OPC or a specialist because like all cars they can be
good ones and bad ones.
