Figure out pretty quick if you want:

An original 924

A 924 turbo AKA 931

A 924S which is a 924 body with a 944 engine ('87-'88)

After having owned a 76' 924 I'd say spend your money to get a good one or
you'll spend your money fixing it.

I've always been partial to the 924S. It was the newest version, so
hence was the most developed, had the best non-turbo performance thanks
to the 944 engine without some of the 944 weight and won't suffer any
of the reliability problems that early 924 Turbos had. There's an '87
924S, red with dark interior, seems to be in good shape, with a buy it
now of under $4,000 on EBay right now:
