I always thought the Omni was just a Chrysler badged version of the Golf I. Anyone know much about it? Also, if memory serves me, there was a Shelby version of the Omni with a turbocharged engine that was unique to the model and a retuned suspension. My understanding is that it was a hell of a car, at least in terms of performance. I'm partial to the MKII 16 valve GTi though. |

I realize this is subjective, but were any American cars attractive betweeen, say...77 and the late 80s? I can't remember any off the top of my head. |

... can you give me the name of Brian Longs book? I'm always interested in picking up new Porsche related literature. |

The first 40 or so pages recount Porsche history from The Beginning, up to and including the 924. The next 3 chapters cover the 944 development, early production, and turbos. Finally a chapter on the 'twilight' years - discussing the S2 and cab, and a few pages on the 968. It then concludes with a few pages on buying and restoration, and some production numbers. There are 190 pages in total. Beautiful photos throughout and very well researched. Especially fun are the numerous reprints of a lot of ad copy from the era. Long comes from a British background, so naturally the RHD and British view shows - but in a pleasant and not overwhelming manner. He seems to appreciate that most of the purchasers of the book will be non-Brits, so does cover the U.S. and ROW models in a very complete fashion. Long also, correctly, notes throughout the ever increasing pricing - which eventually pushed the 944 way above what the market could support for a 4-cylinder auto. Remember that the original 924 cost around $9000 USD, and the final 944 turbos and S2s were nearly $50k just 13 years later! (Still amazes me that Porsche could let that happen...) IMO, Morgans book ("Original Porsche 924/944/968") seems a bit more definitive with respect to the various options available in different years. However Morgans book also has to divide itself more equitably amongst the 924, 944, and 968. I think the Morgan book is probably still the first choice. But Longs book is a *very* close second. Many 944 owners may actually prefer the Long book because of the single series emphasis. Certainly there are lots of interesting photos in the Long book which do not appear in the Morgan book. I guess one really needs to own both... Long has also recently published a comparable book devoted to the 924. I did not buy it, but again a 924 owner might prefer it over the Morgan book and others, due to the single series emphasis. |

Sure. It is simply called "Porsche 944". I bought my copy at the Petersons Auto Museum in LA a few years ago, but now see that it is available through Amazon (and no doubt, many others.) |
