At 13,000 kilometers, the Paris-Dakar is one of the toughest races in
history. In 1986, Porsche entered three 959s to compete. The 959 featured
a six-cylinder boxer engine with a displacement of 2.8 liters and twin
turbochargers outputting near 400 hp. All three completed the race. Two
stood on the podium first and second overall. To add insult to injury, the
non-entry "support" 959 crossed the line sixth overall.
