Default 1990 900Turbo - Q re Fuel pump relay & ECU - 02-24-2007 , 01:42 PM

Having always started first pull, every time for 17 years even in
Switzerland in winter, today it didn't! No hum or tick from fuel pump.

RAC (AAA, etc) came out, worked hard, and found the following:

- Fuel pump ok (by powering fuse point, pump worked and car started)
- Fuel pump relay ok (shorting out ECU, relay engaged, pump worked, car
started)

Thus concluded (and here I don't know what I'm talking about) that ECU was
stopping earth side of relay. Suggested I get ECU tested (GBP40, if faulty,
exchange ECU = GBP 250), and that if OK then the wiring to/from it is at
fault..

The test specialists said they'd Never heard of this ECU going wrong.
They reckon check wiring first to save wasting money.

Any similar experiences? Any clues?

TIA - sb

No similar experiences, I'm afraid (I have always had 8V 900s), but I would
check the wiring first. My gut instinct is that the ECU is unlikely to be
the fault - some short on the wiring is a lot more likely. If the car was
mine (and I've been there with my car, in a manner of speaking), I would
swing by a good auto-electrician and have them test the circuits. I bet they
find all manner of green ends to your wires and some live/ground faults.

Good luck ... Hope you have a satisfactory (and cheap) outcome.

Thanks Paul - thanks for answering - I've sort of done that, via my garage
(ie poss adding a few £s); they say why check the ECU if it's wrong, "let me
just get on and mend it"!. Will report the result back on here, in case
useful to others. (Had an 8v from 81 to 90 - v handsome 4 door version) -
