Default 86 900s> front end jerking left & right - 10-07-2006 , 11:16 PM

front end jerks quickly to a seemingly random side whenever i take off from
a dead stop. this also occured when i progressed through the gears with a
hard release on the clutch. jerking sometimes happens whenever there is a
sudden increase in acceleration. sudden jerk movement has happened also
while driving at a normal pace in 5th gear.

i would appreciate it if anyone has any ideas as to what would be the cause
of this.

thanks,
allen

Hello Allen,
Ball joints, A-arms, springs or shocks could all be possible culprits.
Puy it on some Jack-stands and see if there are any loose or dangling
parts. Rust is an issue, so make sure that the A-arms, shocks and
springs are properly secured. If there is structural damage to the any
connection points, you have a 1800 lb paper weight, due to repair costs.

Safety First! Have a spotter if you get under the car while it is up. Do
not get under it if you only are using the car jack or are alone! Only
jack it up on a flat surface.

...and you're still driving this? Do yourself a favour and at least book
it in for a verdict *now*. I can sort of understand liivng with it if ti
was just isolted to taking off, but 5th gear? Something will probably let
go big time eventually!

86 900? Ok, my first guess would be a lower control arm (A-arm)
dismantling itself. There was a recall a looong time ago across all 900s.
If this one wasn't upgraded, could be that. It's not a huge job but you
will need the car on stands or something more secure than a jack. If it's
not that, at least the car's already up on stands and you can check
everything else out at your leisure.

A second hand arm will do at a pinch but check it out once it's completely
clean and *don't* accept one with *any* cracks or damage at welds. Cheers
