Default 97 9000 Turbo: Ticking in Engine Compartment - 12-05-2006 , 03:51 PM

I've read a few posts and answers about this, but am still not sure
what it is. Symptoms: Ticking that I can hear in the cabin, coming from
the engine compartment, and from outside with hood closed. Can't always
hear it so well when I pop the hood because of the engine noise. Can't
really hear it at speed, probably also because of other noise. Can hear
it best when idling or going slow. Ticks about 3 or 4 ticks per second.
When I gently press accelerator ticking stops for about 1 to 2 seconds
then resumes.Ticking doesn't speed up as I continue depressing
accelerator. Taking advice from previous posts about this I looked for
where it was coming from with a stethoscope; maybe coming from fuel
injectors but I really cant tell with other sounds. Sounds like it
might be coming from area around rear pulley of surpentine belt, but
can't tell about that for sure either. Definitely coming from passenger
side though. If I put my ear to the passenger side fender it's loud. If
I try that on the driver side: nothing. Also... comes and goes -
doesn't do it all the time. It may be ticking when idling after
driving, I stop for a couple of minutes and it doesn't tick at first
when I start it up. I originally heard this about six weeks ago and it
came and went since then as well. Seems like I had the same symptoms
once on a previous 9000. Any thoughts after this overly detailed
description of symptoms, aside from psychological analysis of neurosis?

Sounds like 'tappet noise' to me.

Have you changed the oil recently ?

Just changed the oil. Made the noise before and after - off and on.
Also, bought the car from a SAAB mechanic a couple of months ago. It
was his personal car, and he had replaced the timing and balance
chains, crankshaft bearing, etc. and no doubt checked wear on other
engine parts.

If the rest of the engine is really quiet you might be listening to the
injectors 'ticking' actually.

p.s. please don't top post by the way.

I'm very sure I have the answer for you. My '97 9000 had the same
noise, which I noticed just after I bought it used. The sound was
coming from the same location as yours, and stopped when you gave it a
little gas. I ran across this post from a BMW owner who had what
sounded like the same issue http://jackassofalltrades.com/ticker.html
.. And I took of the passenger fender liner, felt the evap canister
control/puge valve/solenoid while running, and yes, that was it. I was
going to isolate it, but then after a couple of months it stopped
ticking completely. I hope this helps.

I think you are right! It makes sense, because when I put my ear
directly on the passenger fender the ticking is very loud (like sound
source is in direct contact with the metal); much louder than I would
expect if the problem were with belts or pulleys, or the injectors.
Thank you very much, I really appreciate your help with this.

"Symptoms: Ticking that I can hear in the cabin, coming from

When the ticking stops, your car will turn back into a Ford Mondeo
IIRC
