Pity. The GMization continues in every area including (lack of) reliability.
From the Consumer Reports survey it would appear the 9-3 is really dragging
down the score and 9-5 continues to be average and ahead of most of the
other euroboxes.

treasonous, corporate whore, war criminals accountable for their actions.

Completely agree. My 2000 9^5 wagon repair costs (excluding scheduled
services and approximately recalculating for the Consumer Price Index)
now exceeds the sum of the repair costs for two 9000 cars, three C900
and one 99 in only 1/6th of the mileage of the other cars. And I still
haven't had any engine repair due to the oil sludge problem since I
change oil between the scheduled services.

The report is for Model year 2003 when the new 9-3 was launched. The
reliability should go up for the next few model years as the new model
problems are worked out. There is a reason that I refuse to buy the first
models of anything.

Unfortunately, from what I've seen they haven't done much to improve the
car's reliability/quality. The changes that have been made are new features
such as the addition of the new V6. While this is nice, it does little to
enhance the initial quality and longterm reliability of the car.

I'm not so sure GM had a lot to do with it...most of the engineering and
design on the 9-3ss came from Sweden, not Detroit. Yes, the epsilon I
platform design came from detroit (albeit with heavy input from Sweden), but
most everything else was sourced directly from Trollhatten. The epsilon
platform actually proved itself quite well. The rest of the car, left much
to be desired (as far as quality/reliability were concerned).

Unfortunately, all this will make it all the more difficult for Saab as it
fights to make a profit...their insurance premiums against warranty claims
will be going up markedly.

Unfortunately quality is never as good as I want it to be, but I would be
surprised if tweaks have not been applied over the pass three years. Just
before I started working at my current company, it launched a new model, and
I have already modified two castings that have improved the product
considerably. Only one of them would I expect a mechanic to notice unless he
is looking for it. Adding a rib, or larger flange can make big differences
without being noticed.

Pity. The GMization continues in every area including (lack of) reliability.
From the Consumer Reports survey it would appear the 9-3 is really dragging
down the score and 9-5 continues to be average and ahead of most of the

If that is what the survey says then it just shows that it is total
nonsense. I do not believe for one minute that SAABs are the second
worst cars manufactured from a dependability standpoint. That is utter
BS. Remember, this is supposed to be *dependability*, not how many
times you develop a rattle or squeak or the radio display goes missing a
few pixels.

I do not pay any attention to "surveys" regardless of what they say. I
would not go out and buy a Honda just because Consumer Reports fawns all
over them. I do listen to what owners say has happened anecdotally
(somewhat), and pay attention to what *serious* problems crop up. Then
I sit my butt in the car and drive it and decide if this is a car I want
to own.

BTW, I own (or have owned) a '90 C900, '92 9000T, '93 9000CSE, '98
NG900S, '98 NG900SE, '03 900SS Vector, '03 900SS Arc. With all those
cars (over all those years) have I ever had any problems that required
repairs? Of course. But guess how many times I have been stranded
and/or had to have the car towed? Zero.

The SS'es may be "GM'ed" as you say, but if so... I don't really see a
big problem with that. The current crop of 9-3 SS is the best thing
SAAB has made since the C900. What's not up to standard is the level of
service I receive from the SAAB (GM) dealerships. That is what has
become "dumbed down" IMO.

The epsilon platform is very stiff/solid so the stuff that is attached
to it better be attached correctly else there will be squeaks. Couple
that with a stiff suspension (in the Aero) and this ups the need for
good assembly quality.

Awhile back there was in article in the WSJ where Lutz was bitching
about SAAB sourcing its own stereo for the 9-3! Wrong priorities?
