Your dad must have sold another brand of cars as well, because if the
engine was in the back, it wasn't a Saab.

Rear engined in the UK suggests Skoda, Hillman Imp (or rootes group
derivative (maybe a Pug link there)), VW Beetle, or if very old, a
Renault Dauphine. If you confused another brand for a Saab with a rear
engine, I'm going to suggest a Skoda 105/120/130 (badged as Estelle in
the UK) looks quite similar in shape to a 99 Saloon.

Skoda Estelle.

Saab 99

Some similarities in shape, both 70's designs.

I now own a 900 T16, and did own a Skoda 120L. both fantastically
distinctive cars in their own way.

Can only think of Trabant who had 2 stroke air cooled rear engine, and
as far as I'm aware, they never sold in the UK.

And were front engined anyway....

Ah, OK. Not so up on them, always fancied one, because they sound fun
though in a back to basics way.

well the size is similar, but more volvo 300 saloon than anything, too
square..

A 99 has a few more nice curves on it, especially with that semi sweeping
fastback look, concave rear window, clamshell bonnet, curved windscreen.

Actually one car that is often mistaken for a 70's saab of some sort, is the
VW type 4..maybe this is what brian remembers...

Maybe right on the type four, although I thought that the Type 4 was a
lot squarer than the fastback shown. The Variant looks like a type 4,
but the cutaway fastback looks very type 3. Another car that I always
wanted to get hold of.

Oh, I don't deny there was a 2 stroke Saab, just i don't think I've
heard of a rear engined one. And I'm a sucker for a rear engined car, no
matter what it's class status or performance (or even condition
sometimes).

2 Stroke air cooled rear engine - sounds like a bubble car of which there
were many types around in the 1960's.

Very true. But werent most of them 3 wheelers? Or if 4 wheels, the two
rears so close together they almost formed a roller at the rear?

Good old Heinkels, Mescherschmitts, and BMW/Issettas.

Wow, looks like a rival to the Fiat 500/600/126 models. Probably arround
the right age for a 500 direct competitor too.
