Default Which Maintenance at 119K for a '92 Saturn SL1? - 06-27-2008 , 09:08 PM

I've got a '92 Saturn SL1 and I'm wondering which maintenance is due. Also,
the fuel injectors have never been cleaned. Do they need cleaning? If so,
how is it done?

Thanks,

Tom

The obvious answer is to read the owner's manual. That said, you do not
indicate how the vehicle is currently performing or when any previous
preventive maintenance was performed. So generically, at the minimum
(assuming you are referring to mechanical maintenance as opposed to physical
body aesthetics), I would:

Check all fluid levels and condition of each (Oil, Trans, PS, Brake, WW,
etc.)
Change Engine Oil & Filter
Change Transmission Fluid & Filter (Assumes Automatic) Also consider
performing the "Reverse Slam Cure" Procedure when changing the ATF
Replace and Gap Spark Plugs
Replace Ignition Wires
Clean Ignition Coil Towers
Replace Air Filter
Replace Fuel Filter
Replace PCV Valve
Replace all Rubber Belts
Replace all Rubber Coolant/Heater Hoses
Drain, Flush, and Replace Engine Coolant/Antifreeze/Distilled Water (Every 2
Years, Follow all Saturn Recommendations, including 2 sealing pellets)
Bleed all 4 Wheel Brakes (Old Fluid Flushed)
Inspect and Clean Battery Posts and Replace Battery (if over 5 Years old)
Check Brake Material and Disks/Drums on all Wheels
Check Tire Tread Depth & Replace if Needed
Check Pressure on all 4 Tires and the spare too!
Inspect Exhaust System for Leaks/Holes/Rust
Inspect Engine and Trans for Major Leakage from Gaskets/Seals
Verify proper CTS, EGR, and O2 Sensor Operation (all known issues for
vehicles of this age/mileage)
Verify that the horn and all turn signals, brake lights, headlights operate
properly
Verify that wipers and washers work properly
Replace wiper blades if needed
Check All Shocks and Replace if Needed
Clean Fuel System/Injectors using Dupont Techron Additive

Others will likely add additional things you should check/replace, but these
are what come to mind if I were acquiring a vehicle of this age and with the
stated mileage. Good luck.

Yes, I'm referring to routine mechanical maintenance.

The major engine belt was relpaced about 1,000 miles ago.
It's got a manual transmission. Why not change the oil?

Tom,

Buy the bottle of Techron at the auto parts store and read the instructions.
One 12 ounce bottle per full tank since Saturn tank is pretty small. (They
also make a 20 oz. size for larger vehicles.)

Yes, you can certainly drain and change the lubricant in a manual
transmission. Make sure you use the proper replacement fluid.

Thanks all for the advice. It's got a manual transmission I had the trans
oil changed at 69K.
would it hurt to have it done again? All scheduled maintenace has been done
by a Saturn dealer.
At this point the bodsy is rough and I'm holding on to it 'til I find a nice
used Camry or something else.
I live in a large city, park in a large public garage and 90% of my driving
is city.
