Base SL or SL1 will yeild an average of 40mpg on the highway and 25-30 in
the city, ours did. DOHC expect 25-35 mpg.

Wow, you all must use a "heavy" foot. My '94 manual SL averaged just
under 40 mpg *total* (perhaps 60% highway, 40% city) in cold weather and
better than 40 mpg total in summer.

I had a 99 SL, SOHC, stick shift and usually got around 35 city and 40mpg

I have a 97SLI, auto and get around 31 city and 39-40 hwy depending on
A/C
being on or off.

That's awesome. A new hybrid can't do much better than that.

Just imagine what an SL hybrid could do!
A VW diesel rabbit will do a lot better

i get 520 km with 40 liters ( more or less full tank; 75% hwy + 25%
city) .
i don't know equvalents to usa imperial, so i'll leave to you the fun
of working the equivalnet to mpg.
good luck.

sorry, forgot to add, it's a sohc.
40l / 520km = 13km/liter = 30.5778958 miles per gallon (US)

Steve, yea, I do have a heavy foot :-) but I was being conservative. Yes,
you can get a steady 40mpg average from a base SL, many have. In heavy stop
and go traffic like I had back home in FL, it went down though, where I live
now in the boonies, my mileage went way up!
