Default 05 Outback XT Turbo Failure (twice) - 02-18-2007 , 09:37 AM

Yes, I am new to this group and have not been a member of a usergroup
since my first SAAB days in the early 90's. So what brings me here
today is that my turbo blew up twice the other week- it is still in
the dealer's shop. Thankfully I bought an extended warranty that is
covering the issue.
When I picked up the car after the first turbo repair within 5mins it
started making weird noises again so I returned it and insisted on
taking a drive with the mechanic. The second turbo fully blew while
the mechanic was driving it. I really enojoyed that moment. The
dealer didn't change the oil with the first repair, they only topped
it off. At least during this extended stay in the shop they dropped
the oil pan to find...metal (surprise). They apparently found some
things when they opened the rocker panels too. I always owned high
output SAAB turbos and had never, ever had a problem with them, so I
am left scratching my head about why/how this occured in the Subaru.
I would have expected this kind of feature in my beloved SAABs. The
mechanic's lay-person said the Outback was over 2.5 qts low on fuel,
hmmm, why didn't the oil pressure light come on... Regardless, we
regularly change the oil ourselves and I know that there were not two
qts left over after the last change.

But now I am going to have to dump the Subaru because I don't want to
deal with any engine problems from stray metal pieces. Anyone
interested in buying it from me for $22k? (I'll still take a negative
equity hit at this price), 47k highway miles. :-) I am not kidding.
The extended warranty is good to 60k miles. Thanks.

"Low" fuel won't actuate the oil pressure warning
light.

What is a "mechanic's lay-person"?

OOPS! I meant to say OIL! Thank you. Low oil will affect the oil
pressure and the lay person is the woman at the front desk that
interprets the mechanic's comments.

Being low on oil doesn't cause low oil pressure till the no oil
pressure light comes on.
