Default 2007 Legacy GT Limited...NOISEY - 03-04-2007 , 02:22 AM

After driving this for a few months (5-speed auto), it's gotta be one of the
noisiest cars I've ever owned.

The tire noise isn't too bad, but, there's a "wind noise" kind of noise (I
don't think it's actually wind, as, it starts at ~30 MPH and builds from
there) that can pretty much drown out conversation at 60 MPH. I guess it
could be the drive train, but, it doesn't sound like a gear kind of noise or
a whine. If I open a window a crack at high speed, THEN I hear LOUD wind
noise, but, with them all closed, I hear this pretty much all the time.

Are they ALL like this, or, do I have a problem?

Thanks!

My 05 LGT is noisy as well. Tire noise can be instrusive depending on road
surface, and wind noise at higher speeds is obvious. The econocar roots
show through. Some drivetrain noise as well, as might be expected in an AWD
setup.

That said, I find this car the most bang-for-the-buck ever, and can't bring
myself to trade it for any reason just yet. It dusts most every car on the
road with ease.

The GT is made for people who will take advantage of its capabilities.
Others should stay with far less noisy Camry's or even quieter Lexus.

Have your car checked for boost leaks; maybe something is wrong?

Yes, Subarus and wind noise are an item, not justifiable but they are.

Have your dealer get rid of the wind noise, I imagine your car is still
under warranty.

Keep in mind that if you have a roof rack, the cross members could be
causing the noise too. I took them off cause I do not use the roof rack.

Good luck

This is the sedan, not wagon, so no roof racks.

I'm due for my 3000 mile initial check in a few weeks, so, this is top on my
list...

Thanks!

Should be easy enough to go drive another '07 to confirm 'they all do it'.

Shift into neutral and coast sometime (when safe of course) to possibly
alter loads in the tranny and maybe pinpoint a problem area or exonerate
the transmission..

Also, train yourself to avoid pushing on the glass when you close the door.

Take it to the dealer - they likely know where all the noise complaint
areas are.

Ride a sportbike for a few years 10k+ miles per year and you'll
appreciate how much better a car (any car, even an econobox)
is than a bike with any kind of helmet. Even the expensive "quiet"
helmets. The windshields on bikes suck. And even if they did not
you'd roast in sunbelt summers due to no wind to cool you off.
Is the noise the same with all three settings of Si-drive?

Yes, no difference with anything I do, seems to be a speed thing (but, 30-40
MPH seems too slow for "wind noise").

Thanks.
