Check the service book and ask for any service records. Has the Timing Belt
been done?, clutch?, Exhaust?, Tires, Brakes? etc. I f all have been
recently done and the car is in good condition, it MAY be worth 7500 hun,BUT
if many of the items are a 50% life or less then accept that costs, that are
normal maintenance and wear & tear costs, will come up. This is just as true
for Subaru as for any other make. If this is a well, or very well maintained
car, with a good documented ownership history it MAY be worth paying a
slight premium. If the history etc is suspect or unknown, 7500 is probably
too much for a relatively high-mileage car, try 5500 or so.

You are buying an 8 year old vehicle. Regardless of make - it's past
level of care and present condition are FAR better indicators of
potential remaining service life than what brand or model it is.

In general, a well maintained Subaru will have similar longevity to
other well maintained japanese cars.

Find a GOOD mechanic and pay him to thouroughly check ANY vehicle that
old out for you.

there are PLENTY of Subarus with well over 200,000 miles .

Carl

Bought my present 99 Outback with 112,000 Km, a patchy service history,
some evidence of boat towing (that I missed) and heavy tradesman loads
(that I didn't!) three years ago. Got a good enough discount to get a
dealer to do the 100,000 Km major service late and fit a trans oil cooler
as a precaution and it's just turned 165,000 with no problems apart from
the odd fuse or globe, except for a forward clutch pack in the autobox 3
weeks after purchase that was fortunately covered by warranty. Other than
that it's just been tyres, routine servicing & one battery.

Bought previous '91 Liberty wgn at 116,000 with a perfect service record.
Traded it on this at 335,000 Km. Clutches lasted about 120,000 Km (towing
quite often). AFAIR in 7 years it cost me a radiator, alternator, a/c
regas, 2 batteries and 2 ECUs apart from tyres and routine servicing,
which I thought was pretty good. Neither of them ever let the family
down.

Take some other people's advice and get it checked by someone who knows
the make. Cheers

If this has the 2,5 engine I would look for another car. The 99 2.5 was a
one-year only engine design.

I Have a 1995 Subaru Impreza 1.8l automatic, that was not maintained
that well and it now has 407,000kms on in with no engine problems
(yet!!). I don't know if that is a good indicator, might just be luck!
