Default Legacy cold start plus intermittent engine stops - 12-26-2006 , 09:45 PM

I have a 92 Subaru Legacy that runs very well in mild weather but has
developed cold start problems during the last couple of years.
Anything below 25 degrees Fahrenheit and the car will not start. It
cranks fine under all conditions, but when below 25, the engine doesn't
start. I've changed cam shaft sensor, engine temperature sensors three
times, plugs, wires twice, coil and just last week let the nearest
Subaru dealer install new fuel injectors. They indicated that there
were no codes and that fuel pressure was dropping off quickly which
suggested problems with the fuel injectors.

Unfortunately to this point, nothing has fixed the cold morning start
problem.

In addition, after the recent fuel injector installation, the car
engine is periodically stopping while being driven.

The car idles fine but while underway, the engine just stops for about
1/2 a second then resumes normal operation(the interruption in power is
enough for your head to bobble). No alarm lights come on on the dash
when this happens. The only instrumentation signal is in the tach
which shows rpms dropping about 600 before returning to the previous
operating level. These events occur at various speeds, 25 mph or 60
mph, from a start or while underway at highway speeds.

I can live with the cold start but the period engine stops is
dangerous. Last week I was pulling across a lane of incoming traffic
when it hesitated.

The car has 168,000 miles and has been well maintained over the years.

If your car is equipped with a MAF sensor I'd suspect that as one
possibility.
