Default Random STi observations - 02-12-2004 , 09:12 PM

Well, I've had my new STi for a few days now, I've posted about the break-in
hoopla, and I got some great info from some of you. Now, a few observations
I have about the car that I thought I'd share...

1) This is a moot point now, since one person suggested I need not warm my
car up for several minutes, but I noticed that it isn't possible to start up
the car, and then use the extra remote doorlock to lock the car. Is there a
way around this?

2) Seems like there is a strange smell coming from the engine compartment
when I start driving. Is this normal? I just got my oil changed for the
first time and it's still there. Only or a few minutes. Perhaps some
transient oil stink that I shouldn't worry about?

3) Every time I let my foot off the throttle, I hear this very subtle,
low-pitched sound coming from the rear of the car. Is this the waste gate?
It happens every time I let off the throttle. Sounds pretty fuckin metal
actually, but just curious what it is.

Thanks in advance for any helpful input!

Matt

Check the CV joint boots. One of mine split
within the first few thousand miles. If it
splits, the joint flings grease on the exhaust
system.

everone complains about the smells Subarus are cpable of making - my OBW
smelled like oatmeal for weeks after i bought it. Sometimes there is
'cosmolene-like' stuff on parts of the Imprezas put on in Japan to help
keep corrosion under control on the boat, at the dock whatever. Of
course, it could very well be something like an oil, coolant, grease leak
on the exhaust or even something you drove through. Also, some wrx/sti
owners have started developing a fuel leak in extreme cold weather - I
think there is a TSB out now for that.

the wastegate is snuggled up next to the engine, in front. not that then!
the fuel pump is at the rear though, so perhaps it is making the noise.

no, this is a feature. if i recall correctly, it was described in the
latest "drive" magazine. apparently the remotes won't work when the
key is in the ignition.

when i first got mine, i slipped the clutch a lot (my driveway is
uphill and my street is also a hill.) got plenty of clutch stink
until i adjusted to the clutch feel.
