Default Truck Wobble - 04-29-2007 , 04:41 PM

Hello there, I have a 85 toy 4x4 extracab an i am getting a shimmy sometimes with it. It
doesnt matter so much what speed it is, it will suddenly start wobbling like the wheels
are shaking. I have had the wheels balanced, and checked bearings etc and balljoints
and all was good. I am wondering if maybe its my wheels hitting something and starting
to wobble, cause my stearing stabilizer is orginal and probally worn right out.

I welcome any comments.

Thanx
Ken

Have you checked the Idler Arm?
If it goes out the truck will start tracking into ruts in the road, and
wobbling.
They are pretty easy to swap out.

Its a 85 with the straight front end, so it doesnt have an idler arm. Thanx though!

Ken,

Lift the truck and put it on some floor jacks so that the suspension is
....well, suspended! Then look for any joints that are starting to look worn
out. You can also try turning the wheels (make sure the Ignition Key is not
in the "locked" position) to look for lose joints.

Also, this could be a problem with the rear end. The drive shaft isn't bent
is it? If the shimmy gets progressively worse as your MPH gets higher, you
might want to look into that.

If none of this sounds like your problem, write again and elaborate a little
more on your word "shimmy." That could mean a lot of things, and it could
come from a lot of places. "Shimmy" doesn't help that much in diagnosing
something.

If your steering stabilizer is that old it is almost certain that it is
wore out. Cheap to replace and a good place to start on the problem.

Maybe your wheels aren't balanced. See

The only difference between going to jail, and going to sea, is when you go
to sea, you have the added risk of drowning.
