If anyone here is putting off having one done because of horror stories they have heard about how bad it hurts, rest your fears. I have a very low threshold for pain, and it was a piece of cake! Now, when the hemherroids from all the 'bowel cleansing' die down... I mean really.........Thanks for sharing this with us.......(LMAO) |

Had my first Colonoscopy today. They did an Endoscopy while they were at it. The worst part? The day before. You have to drink about a gallon of Polyethelyne Glycol. Whole bowel irrigation (polyethylene glycol with added electrolytes) is used for bowel preparation before surgery or colonoscopy and drug overdoses. It is sold under the brand names GoLYTELY, NuLytely, GlycoLax, Fortrans, TriLyte, Colyte, Halflytely, MiraLAX, Softlax and MoviPrep. DAMN! Every 15 minutes, here we go again!!! And the stuff tastes NASTY! I mixed it with the provided Cherry flavoring; I may never drink anything Cherry flavored again... So, I get to the Hospital somewhat nerved up, but not bad because I broke down and had one of my last remaining tobacco ciggies, and then they start an IV. Next thing I know, we're in the room, and they've given me the meds, but they don't knock you out. As a matter of fact, you're on your side, with a monitor in front of you so you can watch the whole thing. There are two turns in the colon that are a little, er, *TIGHT* and when they go around these it feels like cramps or like you're going to have a BM; the nurse I had pressed a little on my abdomen and the discomfort subsided. All in all, it was pretty neat! If anyone here is putting off having one done because of horror stories they have heard about how bad it hurts, rest your fears. I was in for one Monday - he had me prep with Mag Citrate and Dulcolax -like a frigging mini-atom bomb - it does clean you out - It had been 10 years and he came in said its fine, see you in 10 years and I said doc, I'll be 81 and might just say to hell with it, The test is a snap but 36 hours of cleaning out isn't pleasant to me Peace of mind is good though. Ron Wow. Mine was only about 12 hours. I started at 6 last night and finished at 6 this morning. Did you see any old wads of chewing gum? You know the ones we swallowed in class when the teacher asked, "Do you have gum in your mouth?" Actually what I'm interested in is the cost. |
